Default Unplugged/Replugged MAF now only getting 5psi :(

Hi guys,

Tonight i just installed a k&n cone filter, so i obvioulsy had to uplug the MAF and all. I reconnected everything went for a drive and wouldnt boost more than 5psi

i would normally get around 7-10psi with k04 and stock ecu,

anyone know the problem? bad MAF? n75? ahhh wish i didnt install the cone filter now

From the sounds of it no parts are bad, unless the filter was over oiled and oil got on the maf. My advice would be to take off the filter, wash it and re oil it yourself, making sure you have enough oil but not too much.

Back on topic 5psi is a symptom of limp mode. Unfortunately I'm kind a noob at how to get out of limp mode but I'm positive that searching "limp mode" will get you some answers and I'm sure someone else will chime in.

Can you scan for codes? That will give you insight into why you are in limp mode instead of tearing the car apart again.

hmmm, i wouldve got it scanned but i dont have easy access to vcd,
i did abit of reading and found that if you unplug the MAF and leave it unplugged the ecu will use default maf figures and wont boost above 5psi, but i did plug it back in??

i have a 98' aeb engine, dont think it has limp mode so it must be maf related.

also the filter was brand new so it was oiled by k&n, so i dont think it was over oiled, even it if was it shouldnt affect the MAF so quickly

im going to put the stock airbox back in today, hopefully it fixes the problem.

on another note, wow, the k&n filter is so loud, almost annoying loud, under WOT it sounds amazing, but just cruising it can get a bit annoying with the huffing and puffing

so i just put the stock airbox in and its running the same, wont go over 5psi!

i just disconnected the battery and will reconnect and go for a drive in an hour see if that helps anything, if not il try cleaning the MAF next w/e and go get it scanned too

anyone other suggestions?

Disconnecting the battery longer probably won't do anything.

Limp mode is present on all A4s, I have a 97 and have spent my fair share of time in limp mode.

The next step would really be to pull codes and see where the problem is. You didn't do any other mods at the same time?

yes only did the cone filter at the time so im pretty sure its maf related. possibly there is a low reading for some reason o using default maf numbers. cleaning it may help i guess.

i probs wont be able to do this or get it scanned till next w/e

Did you make sure to leave the key on for about 30 seconds after plugging the battery back in?

Did you make sure to put the MAF housing back in the correct direction?

BTW putting in a cone filter isn't going to kill the MAF the second you start the motor, even if the filter was completely soaked it would take a good amount of time to kill the maf.

what u mean leave the key on for 30 seconds? i let it idle for about 30 seconds if thats what you mean

ye i put the MAF in the right way, i even tried turning it the other way to see if I put it the wrong way the first time but that made the car idle really **** so that was wrong.

il try cleaning the MAF connectors, clearing codes and if that doesnt work clean the MAF!
