Default Vag-Com Connection

I have a question about the communication. I bought a ebay USB vag-com cable from this guy:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...=STRK:MEWAX:IT

I have a 2000 Audi A4 1.8T Quattro. Everything in the car is still stock and factory, nothing electrical has been changed or anything, not even the radio. I have installed the drivers for the cable and the computer recognizes it. I'm using a dell latitude d600 laptop. I connect the cable to my obd port and i get the green LED. I turn on the vag-com software that you included in the cd-rom, and tested teh COM ports, and I get a confirmation on COM port 3 that its reading and detecting my cable. But I cannot connect to the vehicle. No matter what i try, it will just keep trying, but never communicate. Can you shine some light here? is there something I'm missing

Its a question i actually sent the seller himself, but just cpoy n pasted here for some input from my fellow audi fanatics.

I'd like to know as well. I bought one and have the software on one of my laptops but just haven't tried it yet.

I bought a similar cable last year and it connected just fine to my 2001 2.8 Q. I suggest you check out the Ross Tech web. They have a pretty good FAQ and other technical info.

If I remember correctly, they had a list of computers that would/would not work with their software. There were other COM port settings to know as well.

Be sure you turn the key on after you connect the cables from the car to the computer. You can then test the connection to the ECU from the first page of the software to see if it connects.

Ok, i did everything said above but still no connection. I uninstalled the usb-serial hardware, let the computer read it to the port where i'm going to use it, and it installed teh drivers by itself this time instead of asking me like it did the first Is any one using one of these third party cables with vag-com and getting it to work?? I really need this to work so i can diagnose my abs light and reset my service light, and i wanna tweek some other things......
