Default Very hard to start once engine has warmed up

A4 99 Avant- Starts OK when it is cold. Once warmed, then shut off, it becomes very hard to start. The starter turns the engine fine, but it will not fire. You have to play with the gas pedal abit and after about a min of starter cranking it will eventually catch. Once it finally starts, the idle starts to waver back and forth between 2000 and 2200 rpm. After a mile or so of driving everything is normal, idle at 950.

Can someone help out here?

Check for fault codes. If none, replace your engine coolant temp. sensor.

dont know what the problem is but dont ever run your starter for more than a few seconds!!!!!!! you said a minute of cranking and thats way too much. That is exactly how starters get burnt up. sorry to harp and preach but ive heard some bad stories that started out like yours. and they dont end with just a couple dollars being wasted. the most that should be done is ten seconds of cranking and thirty seconds of cooling down at a minimum!

It's your Coolant Temp Sensor. I will put $10 on it. It's a cheap part even from the dealer ($10-$15).

its variable resistance depending on the temperature which makes it hard to measure. just go to ecstuning.com and buy a new one for like $8.

Hey did you ever fix this? I have same problem and p0118 code -coolant temp sensor voltage high- sounds like this is likely possibility. Did you try this fix, and did it work?

Third on the coolant temp sensor. Just make sure that you get the correct color, they come in blue and green.
