Default Wastegate Problems Audi 1.8t

I few months back I had a slight rattle that ended up being the wastegate arm vibrating because it was loose. The other day I lost all boost and figured its the WG. Now I can each around and get my fingers on the arm and I can open and close it with my fingers.

My question is.. Did it just vibrate loose and it needs to be tightened? Or Is the solenoid itself shot? I'd like to try and have any answer before I take it apart to access the wastegate since its my DD.

Thanks for any help.

Mike

I'm pretty sure you should not be able to open/close the wastegate manually. I'm thinking the arm is broken where it connects on the inside or the spring broke.

Circled in red is where I've seen them break on the inside:

Definately have to remove the turbo to service it either way.

Thanks for the reply. I know the arm should not move at all. I can manually move in open and closed. Can it be tightened or can it be a spring problem?

The only thing that can be tightened/adjusted is the locking position nuts on the wg actuator arm shown in the pic:

Either way, since you can open and close the wg, thats probably not your problem.

Might want to check the classifieds for a used turbo.

I'm going to try and find a used wastegate 1st. You can replace just the wastegate on these right? Or are they a solid unit? Thanks for the replys.

Its hard to tell from the picture but how does the arm attatch to the flapper? Is it a bolt or is it one solid piece?

I forget who sells them, but you can get a new wastegate for the cost of a used turbo with decent miles. You def. wont find a used k03 wastegate w/o the turbo still attatched. I've never seen anyone selling the wg seperate from the turbo. I remember a thread where a guy replaced the broken wg arm "hinge" with a nut and bolt.

Thats just the wg actuator arm assembly.
His wg flapper /hinge on the wg itself is probably the problem, not the actuator. Same for you.
