What do you guys think of this A4. It's a '99 1.8t quatro with 119,000 mi. Clean Title. 5sp. Recently serviced:new timing belt, new valves, water pump. brand new cam seal, valve cover gasket, and output stage. brand new spark plugs.
asking for $6000 O.B.O It needs new tires soon though and has a cracked windshield. The maintenance was all done under 1000 miles ago. I did some searching on here and figured out that I wanted a 1.8T instead of the 2.8. I didn't find anything on how long the turbos usually last before they go bad, so if someone could let me know.

Thanks

new valves? sounds like he blew the timing belt. do a compression check and leakdown test and if those check out, i'd offer him 5k and see what he says.

Who did the repairs? If a car has had all that work done in the last 1K miles, if you incur any problems after you buy it b/c the repairs weren't done right, would anyone guarantee the work? Don't take his word for it, put it in writing.

There's a silver one also for sale in the bay area on CL as well for $5500 but it's from a dealer. That one looks nice too and is comparable to the one you have looked at already.

There's also another one in SF with some mods going for $6K. If I bought this car, first thing I would do is change the wheels. Good thing about this car is that it's a one owner.

yeah i saw those ones too. As for a warranty on the new stuff i doubt it because the guy only has the reciepts for the parts and had a BMW mechanic do the work on the side. So I'm pretty positive I'm not going to get anything under warranty. I'll look into those other ones too. I was doing more research on here and found the thread with all the problems people have had, very depressing. I know a lot about cars, but still don't want to deal with having constant problems.

I would buy it just for the interior. My car is santorin blue and I have the dark interior but I love the contrast. overall though i would say try and knock the price down a bit.

Hey guys I think i'm gonna pass on that one, thanks for your help. I just found another one, it's a 1999.5 1.8t 5 spd. with 96500 miles. It had the timing belt, water pump, tensioner, ignition control module, etc. replaced. It's got a rebuilt abs module with warranty. Its also got aftermarket exhaust, and a diverter valve from a TT. It looks clean in the pics and doesn't have any problems. They're asking 7k for it but he said he would come down a bit, I'm thinking 6k or 6500 because thats the upper limit of my budget.

That one from the dealer in San Carlos was a fu*cking joke. I went and saw it before I bought mine like 6 months ago. Wow that thing was awful no one go and look at it. Waste of gas money to go drive and see.

why was it so bad? I guess it must be if its been there for 6 months. Does anyone know any audi mechanics in San Jose that I could take the car to for a check up while I'm test driving it?
