What I did today...
Today was the 2009 MidCoast Road Rally here in central Iowa. About 125 vehicles participated in the all-day event, a classic timed rally. We started in West Des Moines, had checkpoints at the Bass Pro Shop in Altoona, the Iowa Speedway in Newton, Saylorville Lake, Hotel Patee in Perry, and ended at the Iowa State Fairgrounds. First place went to a silver New MINI with a variance of 22 mins from the audited time. The Iowa Speedway was our lunch stop, and we all got to do laps (with a pace car out front keeping everyone at 60mph, of course). Here's a pic of my B5 in pit lane!
All kinds of cars turned out, from a rented Nissan Sentra to a GT35r MkIV VW R32 turbo to a Mosler MT900s, an Aston Martin DB9 convertible, a couple of Ferraris, old BMWs, new BMWs, a bunch of Chevy HHR's, a few Pontiac GTO's (new ones), a Baja Bug, a dune buggy... you get the picture.

I won't know exactly where I came in in the overall rankings until the 2009 MidCoast Road Rally Sexy Halloween/Video Release Party (which should be pretty sweet), but it's really not a speed contest. I was (mostly) going the speed limit all day - the competition comes down to who can follow directions the best. They don't announce checkpoints ahead of time; when you leave each checkpoint, they give you a list of directions to the next checkpoint consisting of indicating either turn right, turn left, or continue forward onto whatever street name, and average X mph. You don't get times or distances, and straying from the published route will more than likely have a negative effect on your variance from the audited time, so there's no advantage if you happen to figure out where you're going when they hand you the directions. And like I said, we had to stay behind a pace car going 60mph at the track, which kinda bummed me out because I was hoping to try out my top speed!
I didn't take a whole lot of pics; so I'll see if anyone else has posted theirs and then copy them here!
