Default What seal?

Hey. I was trying to find the right seal to replace on ecs tuning. I have a seal leaking from the drive shaft coming out of the transfer case back towards the rear diff. Its the one that is right above the exhaust and looks to be a common problem. I think its part #5810. 97 12v 2.8 quattro manual. So I'm thinking its the output shaft seal. Just need a couple of confirms if possible. Bently little hazy on it.

After getting up under there the best I could I think its the pinion seal. Right above the little s curve in the exhaust and in front of the muffler. Looks like it connects the shafts. Any ideas? Replace the bearing? 101k on it now.

Are you talking about the axle seal? Take a pic, I'm confused. The transfer case is integral to the transmission... it's a torsen center diff.

I will see what I can do with the pic. Yes its the axle seal I believe. Just not sure which one it is off of ecs tuning. Thanks

I would just go to the local dealer and get the parts over the counter; they can show you a parts diagram. At least you'll know for sure that it's right. Plus, after shipping, and the hassle of potentially getting the wrong one, you'll have been better off going to the dealer anyway.

Well I ordered a pinion seal and it was right part that we thought was leaking but there is some sort of stick on gasket that goes up in there as well and it slinging grease or something from the cv joint on the main drive shaft. After looking in the Bently my buddy is freaked out about touching the drive shaft because of the special vag alignment crap it's calling for if you remove it. Do you really need that damn thing or???

I still don't really know what you're talking about. What seal? Are you working on the rear diff, the center diff, or the trans? Which driveshaft are you aligning?

The final drive into the rear diff. Its that seal I thought was leaking (pinion). buddy said there is another gasket seal per bently that is a stick on seal? lol. He was afraid to take down the drive shaft because of all alignment issues.

The "stick-on" seal you're referring to is probably the diff mount "seal." It's reusable, as it's just a barrier for noise. Below is a pic of my rear diff mount with Stern Power Ring installed. The black foam piece on top is a stick on.

If that's no the one, try and get a pic from the Bently manual or a part number. I can call a buddy at the dealer to see what part it is for you.

As for the center driveshaft, there is nothing to line up. It's balanced as a separate assembly. Does the manual say what it is that needs to be centered?
