fill up the car, reset the trip odometer, then when you fill up again, divide the milage on the odo by how many gallons fits in the tank. that is the only way to get your MPG. how many miles you get out of a tank is just a guesstimate.

15/260 is the tank divided by the mileage which is pointless. its the mileage by the tank 260/15 = about 17.33 mpg

the tank isnt 15 gallons, and unless you are running completely empty thats not going to be accurate. you need to know how much volume you are displacing when filling up the tank again. which is why you see how much gas fits in the tank after a certain amount of miles, that tells you exactly how much you used.

that readout is probably not the most accurate thing ever. also its not a good idea to run the car dry, the fuel pump is cooled by the gas circulating in the tank, if there isnt any gas it can burn out. also the difference between 15 and 16.4 gallons is the difference between 17 and 20mpg. if you dont want an accurate number, go ahead and do it your way.

I always fill with 93 and reset my odometer. I don't remember the exact figure but it was around 310+ miles, definitely lower than 320 but I'm sure I would have been able to go that far but I don't like running my car too low. I do mostly highway driving with a mix of local and my job is about 20 miles away each way.
