Hey guys I have a 2000 a4 2.8 v6 and i usually put my car in reverse just incase my ebrake fails and today i found out that i can take it in and out of gears without haveing the clutch engaged while the car is off.....i freaked out cause im hopping something isnt wrong with my tranny but was wondering if you guys can help me out????

 

all cars do that, you dont need to freak out

the car dosent need to run to move it thru the gears, nor does the clutch need to be pressed either. not good to run thru the gears that way, but you wont kill it either

 

lol yeah i was messing around one day and noticed that. also just so you know, while driving and slowing down, if you dont downshift and let the revs fall low enough you can take it out of gear without touching the clutch too

 

word im about to try that but guys i have a question about some signs of tranny failure??

 

Why don't you describe your symptoms?

 

well i have none because i dont know the syptoms...i serched and found gear slipping but thats mainly all i could find...just want to get a idea of what type of condition it is in.

 

that's pretty vague lol. don't even know where to start describing things to you. if you drive to NY i can drive your car and be able to tell you about how well of condition it's in lol.

 

It sounds like you want an inspection. So...you know...go get one. The guys on this forum know a lot, but they're not going to be able to evaluate the overall condition of your transmission.
