whining noise when pressing the clutch

ive just noticed the last few days on my 97 audi a4 158k miles that when i press the clutch i during a gear change there is a slight whinning noise (thought it was the missus at first as shes always whinning) but it did it when she wasnt in lol.
im thinking maybe the thrust realse bearing or maybe low on gearbox oil but this is my first audi so any ideas any1 before i start strippin stuff i dont need to....cheers

Could very well be the throwout bearing. Transmission oil is easy enough to change, definitely start by trying that. There are various DIYs floating around, and ECS tuning has a nice kit for it.

How old is your clutch?

I used to get a squeak noise that sounded like a rusty door hinge when I would push in my clutch. Flushed the clutch/brake fluid and it went away. Is it only when changing gears while the car is moving or can you just sit in it in your driveway and pump the clutch and reproduce the noise?

I'm going to go with throwout bearing if the clutch is original at 158k.

not to sure how old the clutch is but it feels good, would a clutch last 158k miles?, noise is only while driving when pressing clutch. thanks

It could certainly last that long if it hasn't been mistreated. Does it make the noise if you push the clutch pedal and rev it up while stopped?

ive just been out and checked and it actually does do it while running just loader when the clutch is pressed

khanny1 Sep 1, 2013 12:51 PM

ran it round the block and its there ll the time seems to get loader as speed increses

Can you hear it if you pop the hood while it's running?

If it makes the noise all of the time (even when stopped?), and not just when the clutch is pressed, then I would think that it's something other than the throwout bearing/transmission.
