Default Why you should not drive your car with no PS fluid

So long story short, my power steering cooler got mangled and started leaking ps fluid while i was driving back to tallahassee. i thought it would be fine to keep going and that i would just not have power steering. WRONG! costly mistake on my part. here's the damage

the ps pump's shaft that connects it to the pulley got bent, throwin the whole belt and shutting off the car (at 80mph)

see that nasty chunk missing too? here's a close-up

it also took a nice chunk out of the cast aluminum piece it sits in (luckily didn't go all the way through and barely missed a bolt)

and both the a/c belt and main serpentine belt were frayed. no pics of that, they're in the garbage.

so i ended up needing a new pump, cooler, 2 belts, and ps fluid. dealership tried to rape me for over 400, and if i let them do it, close to a grand including labor. eff that. 100 bucks, 6 beers, and 2 hours later, its done.

worst part about it was, i just took my car apart to do the fmic and snub mount not a week before this all happened[:@]

that does suck! but now its new no more grinding steering wheel! stick to the CHF or CFH whatever it is, the hyrdalic fluid not power steering fluid

i just replaced it with a used one, not a new one. a new one is ~300, a used one ~50. and yeah i know the right ps fluid to use, its CHF 7.1 G2000

i can feel you, i know how it feels when you have to repair all over again. Small mistakes on these cars seem to be costly.

Holy crap, it really took out the pump. I wasn't counting on seeing damage that serious to it.

^LMAO

ORIGINAL: SAudi

damn, i bet you thought the t-belt went when the car shut off.
lol yup, first thing i thought. i was really stressing until i noticed a half torn belt hanging from the front of the engine. thank god it wasn't that

and yeah i was surprised at the extent of the damage too. i showed it to Auditech and he said thats the first time he's seen that happen, and that was only when i knew about the bent shaft.

and i have a few random nicks in the cast aluminum pieces surrounding the pump. i dont even get how they got there, or how a huge chunk in the ps pump was taken out. but oh well. live and learn

so the grinding noise is common in higher mileage cars then? or is that just a bad thing period?

but like stated above atleast it wasnt the t-belt...
