I'll have to let you guys know how it comes out. And yes, I will be welding up my own press to get the bearings out.

 

nice man... where did you get the rears from and how much? I dont see any carriers in the pics either?

 

Are those standard size rotors?

 

Looks like an A8 kit - if so, excellent. You'll LOVE it I'm also interested in the rears, where you got them, and for how much. As for the 14mm allen bit, AutoZone and Advance Auto both carry them. I got a three-pack there with 10mm, 14mm (for the rear axle bolt), and 17mm (for the front axle bolt) for less than $10. Don't forget about the 7 or 8mm allen bit for the caliper bolts too.

 

Actually no they AREN'T the A8 rotors. I didn't have the extra $150 to get that kit. Believe be, I wanted to get it. I must just have small hands. I got it all from ECStuning. I think the rear rotors were $120.

 

Not bad at all. At some point in the future if the funds allow, definitely upgrade to the A8 setup. You would probably be able to sell those rotors pretty nicely to offset the cost of it.

 

oh, they're stock size? they looked bigger... does anyone offer an "A8" upgrade for the rear?

 

Since the A8 brakes are roughly the same size as the stock S4 brakes, I'd imagine a similar size in the rear, so probably the S4 brakes would be the same. Problem is, you need much more than just rotors and carriers and the rear S4 brakes are expensive to fit to an A4. Not to mention that since we have such a forward-bias to the braking system, a size upgrade for the rear really isn't needed for anything short of a dedicated track car. The rotors he bought, with good pads, are all you need in the rear.

 

Well it looks like it won't be happening this weekend. No one in this "mechanic forsaken valley" has a 14mm hex bit. Snapon.com here I come.

 

Well finally got the thing done yesterday. Like everyone else, once I pressed the hub out of the old bearing, the old bearing fell apart. I built my own press but my 4 ton bottle jack didn't have the power to push the outer sleeve of the old bearing out. So I had to take it to a local shop, luckly the someone was actually there on a saturday, and the guys was able to press it out, and HE DIDN'T EVEN CHARGE ME. NICE!! Got the whole thing back together and put the 4 new brakes and now the back end is nice and quite. Sweet!
To anyone that is going to replace their own bearings; It's not that dificult to get everything apart, but save yourself the time and headache and just plan to take the hub to a shop to press out the old bearing and press in the new one. Unless you have your own 30 ton press, then go for it.

And sorry for the dirty car pictures, I haven't had a chance to wash the car in about 3 weeks.
