1.8T= tried and true horsepower, and fairly easy to tune.
2.0T= higher horsepower potential, however it will cost you double to achieve the same power numbers. The 2.0T is direct injection, so you automatically need to upgrade the high pressure fuelpump which will run you $1,000 just for the pump. Not to mention that there has been several failures with these pumps, they also destroy the intake camshaft because its driven by that cam. So if it were to ever fail your looking at a $3,000 repair later on down the road. The 1.8T isn't in danger of any of that.

ok so its the 1.8t then lol. also i was wondering if maybe i should just get the s4 then if im gonna do some heavy modding. what do you think would be better/faster modding wise in the end. i know the s4 has the 2.7 turbo. but i was wondering if maybe the a4 can keep up?

auditech79is right.
b7 is more expensive than b6, and so as all the aftermarket parts. some offtop:chipped 2.0t =ko4 1.8t.

two turbos = double the modding price!
then there is the new S4 with NA v8.. not much you can do but nice all around car.. depending what you want to spend... you can get a a4 1.8t and do the following:
suspension
BBK
BT kit
exhaust
FMIC
clutch
+ some other random googies
you will have a car that will easily best a v8 s4 in handling, braking, power and still get close to 30mpg on the highway whereas the s4 might get 18 if u drive it easy on the highway and 10-14 in town

S4's are expensive to mod. With the A4 you only have to worry bout one turbo's system going wrong whereas the 2.7t's problems can get hassling and if you want to go Stage III it's be 50% more $$ than an A4. Dont get me wrong, that 2.7t engine hauls serious *** but unless you really really crave spanking Mustangs and Corvettes all the timefor $15k worth of mods. but theproblems dont end with just the mods, you have to make sure they all run smoothly all the time andeveryone should know thatonce you mod a car something will always go wrong at one time or another.I was gonna buy another 2.7t MT A6 but i'm becoming more of an A4 guy. With the right BT set up you can be blowing doors out of a lot of S4's.
any BT a4 would walk a v8 s4..,.
i would just consider what you are buying the car for... a daily driver or a weekend/project car.. the first s4 is a 8-9 year old turbo sports car with a host of known issues at that age, it will be expensive to mod/maintain and may not be as reliable ( i have no 2.7t experience)
keep looking for a mildly modded 2004+ a4 1.8t would be my recommendation if this car is going to be your daily driver

Still go with the A4, i just downgraded from a 2.7T S4 because the price to keep an S4 running is way more than the A4.
A heavilly modded S4 wouldn't be a good daily driver either. Not to mention you have to pull the 2.7T's engine out to change the turbos which will run you over 30 hours of labor.
