Cam adjusters don't go out on a 3.0L, and they are on front on that engine. Its a different design than the other motors, it has 4 seperate tensioners built into the cam pulleys, thats that chattering noise you hear when you first start it up, only happens on 3.0L's.
As far as is being more reliable.....meh. The 3.0L requires less maintenance, but when it does break, the repair bill is much larger than a 1.8T.

The 3.0 will have a few more nice little add ons in the interior as heated seats and all. Other then that its all about quattro.
The chip thing was definitely on my mind when I chose the 1.8T - I like the idea that it's possible to go from 170 to 209 HP with a software upgrade, and will probably look at doing that at some point in the future when I can more easily spare the cash for something that's a want rather than a need.

I take it the cold weather package was standard equipment on 3.0 A4s? (My 1.8T has heated seats, and to be honest, I kinda thought they all did, but maybe it's just a common option here in the frozen north - I live in Minnesota.)

Yeah, I'm seeing that, but so far I've only had to do regular maintenance. I think my fuel pump and filter are next. As far as the adjuster, I've heard one case, the dude just had a CEL and the dealer gave him the cam adjuster as fault.

At least we don't have the first models that chewed the cam lobes.
