Hi all,

I looked around for related posts and found one regarding an A6 owner with the same problem, but nothing specific to the A4.

So here goes:

I had a 2000 A4 Avant 1.8t and bought upgraded tires/rims for it for summer specific driving. The rims are Ronals, and were bought specifically for the 2000 avant 1.8t. The tires were 225/45 R17s.

I no longer have the 2000, and replaced it with a 2002. In researching new tires Tire Rack brought up 235/45 R17s as a 17" stock size for the A4 Avant 1.8t. It seems the newer spec for tires is a little larger, but I want to make sure that the old rims will work with my car.

Any advice?

Rims should be fine, it is the change in tire diameter that will mess with your speedometer. Check on the tires forum and find the tire diameter calculator and compare the tires you are running now to the size you have. I have 2003 a4 and it specs out as 235/45/17.

It won't hurt to put a different size tire on as long as you put all four on, assuming quattro. You will just need to know how far your speedo will be off by and drive accordingly.

When it is time to replace the tires, size the new ones properly.

I am getting new tires for it so I will go ahead and get the larger ones spec'd. So far everyone I have asked (tire rack, my local dealer, my old mechanic in CA) all say the same thing - go for it.

I think I will follow all of your advice and do just that.
