Default 2004 A4 1.8TQ - throttle/acceleration boggs and cuts off, then restarts

Hey guys,

Today i replaced the heater core on my 2004 A4 1.8TQ. If it wasnt for the stupid hardware for the pipes to clip onto the heater core, its actually an easy job. Finally after replacing all the coolant temperature sensors, thermostat, and now heater core, the car has HEAT!!!

While replacing the heater core, i was told by a guide to disconnect and remove the accelerator pedal module, which i did. Probably during the replacement of the heater core i may have pressed it down.

Anyways, i put everything back, flushed the coolant, bled the system, and now i have 2 problems.

1) When i shut down the car, and lock it, and all the lights are off. The rear brake lights/tail lights are on. After research i'm leaning towards a brake light switch failure. Does that sound right? i'll probably replace it tomorrow.

2) The main problem. While driving, i will press the pedal and accelerate and intermittently it will cut off the throttle and bog down. I will then have to release the gas pedal, and press it again so it will finally work. Im guessing the programming with the pedal and drive-by wire is screwed up. Is there anything to reset this thing? should i go to the dealer to get it reprogramed? any sensors that could cause this? will it reset from sitting or test driving for a long period of time?

i'm quite good mechanically, so i dont mind doing some jobs myself. If it needs to be reseted with a specialty tool or computer, i dont mind taking it to the dealer.

Please help me out!!

Thanks in advance!

-Rod

Hello,
I have the same exact issue that you are reporting here but I haven't mess around with my heater.

This is what I think, the brake lights staying on is related to the problem seen on your throttle as that is common in our problems.

I need to know one thing, do you have LED tail lights installed on your car?

I have LED tail lights and a section of LEDs is not turning on, since them I started having problems with my LED tail lights staying on all the time and killing my battery. Originally I thought that it was related to cold temperature and the fact that the lights are not OEM but now that I read your post I'm positive that the throttle / acceleration issue is related. It could be that the fly by wire system is acting up and somehow the tail lights are involve in this.

FYI:
.-I have replace my DV valve springs thinking that that was the problem with the accelerator bugging off - Problem still there!
.- Replaced the throttle body module - problem still there!
.- Had an APR certify shop checking to resolve acceleration issue and until now no luck!

Does anyone else in this forum knows what is going on?
I'm killing my battery in a day as my LED tail lights stay on when the car is OFF. When the car is ON, they simple act as if I was pressing the brake pedal as the Brake light strips stays on while driving. The car has this horrible acceleration issue on where I have to release the pedal and pressed again to regain acceleration. Any ideas?

I'm about to install the original tail lights to see if the issue goes away but I'm afraid that there may be another thing that got damaged. I read another post on where a guy reported a similar issue and he claim that it went away by replacing the throttle body module located underneath the driver's side panel (see link) (http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...-wont-turn-off) so even if I put the original tail lights I may have already damage a module.

Will really appreciate any help!!!

LC.

The heat on my car is on the same boat , i dont got a clue what is causing it to take for ever to heat the interior or sometimes only blowing cold air out , not to mention that a few weeks back i started to get my window frozzed on the inside too , not only have to scrap the window on the outside at 7AM but also do it inside and it s pissing me off , from what i keep reading it s a commom problem to appear on Audi A4 1.8T , skylinergtr can u tell me how much it cost to perform all that u did replace , and if i need to get it done at VW how much can i expect them to charge me plz

Default Can anyone help with the problem?

Can anyone help with the actual problem related to the acceleration rather than commenting irrelevant things?

We really need help with regards to this weird issue that may be linked to the brake lights remaining on. The symptoms are the same as the one reported on the original thread here.

Comments?

Hey Rod (Skylinergtr) and LC (Churumeru), I know this post is pretty old, but I'm having the exact same problem with my 05 A4 Q. This post is the only one that I have found that describes my problem exactly (power cutting out until I release the gas pedal and press it again). I'm also having problems with my brake lights staying on all the time. I'm guessing, since you had the same problems, that these issues are related. Anyway... did you find a solution? Please help... I'm at a total loss. Thanks. ~Brian

Default 2004 throttle problem

I also have the same throttle problem. When I'm driving the throttle cuts out and I have to release it and press it again to keep going. In addition, my cruise control cuts out and doesn't always work, and then I get an error message that relates to a brake switch when I look at it with VAG-Com. The throttle and CC problem don't always occur together.

Default gas pedal - brake switch problem

I had the brake switch replaced and all the problems are gone. Evidently it's a common problem.
