Question A4 1.8T vs 3.0 V6

I'm in the market for a new car and instantly fell in love with the B6 A4. I'm just having trouble on deciding which version to buy. My budget is about $10,000. I'm leaning towards the 3.0 V6, because it seems to be the more reliable car for my budget. I have no intentions of modifying it, I would leave it bone stock. I like the extra HP and the six speed vs. the five speed in the 4 cyl. But my main concern is reliability and repair costs. For $10,000 it looks like I'll be able to afford an A4 with about 80,000 miles on it. Are there any issues I should look out for when buying a used B6? Any reason I should go for the 1.8T instead of the 3.0? I'm having a hard time finding a 6-Speed 3.0 V6 by me. Thanks for Your Help!!

I would get the V6, but at that mileage either would be close to a timing belt job, and it costs more for the 3.0.

Hi,

If you look a page or 2 further, you'll find someone else who asked that exact same question:

https://www.audiforums.com/forum/sho...18#post1067718

I have had a 2002 1.8T, a 2005.5 2.0T, and a couple other audi's

Currently I have a 2002 A4 3.0 and love it (6-speed). creature comforts that I like are the auto dimming rear view mirror, rear seat heated seats, side mirrors fold in when you park in a tight spot, etc.,

I just got my car with 80K miles. Here's what I would suggest you do...

lastly, I like the 3.0 a lot. Of course, I've modded mine with a chip and sprint booster, so after $700 in go-faster mods, it's perfect, but you may not care about that. the turbos are great when modded, but I'd take my 3.0 with my SBooster and chip any day....

Thanks for your help, I've pretty much decided on the 3.0 V6. Are there any known issues associated with the 3.0? Anything to look for when picking one up second hand? I've heard of water pumps going at about 75,000 but that's about it, anything else? This is the car I'm considering.

The timing belt would need to be done asap, unless they can prove that its been done already. Call around and see how much that is going to cost. (dealers charge about $2k)

Wow, $2,000 for a Timing Belt job, I found a kit online for $380 and would do the labor myself and save the $1,620. What kind of repairs are worth noting, AKA ungodly expensive to have a dealer repair?

Everything is ungodly expensive at the dealer. If you can work on the car yourself youll be ok. Search for a diy on the TB job, should be one at audidiy.com. The whole front of the car has to come off. If you can handle that youll be ok with the other stuff!

If I can find an 07 GTI that i want, you can buy my 2005 b6 audi a4 1.8t 6speed. 53-54K miles on it. $12-$13000. HR Springs, apr exhaust, apr chip, injectors, diviter valve, intake cone, tinted windows, pretty fun to drive, quick enough for driving, quattro is great. This is not the ultra sport though, and I have never had an issue with this car, regular maintenance, always 93 octane, get about 400-450 miles per tank. (14-15 gallons). If I can find an 07 gti for about 14-16000 dollars.

By the way, my apr stage 1+ a4 is just as quick if not quicker than the 3.0 and I believe better on gas, but I'm not sure about the latter.

              Howdy,

I'm still on my first tank, so can't tell you how many miles per tank, but looks to be around 350 on my 3.0L. Although, I do drive fast and like to punch it, so I'm sure I could get better if I didn't drive the way I do.

If you're not modding, then go 3.0. If you want to mod heavily, then think turbo cars...
