Default A4 (B6) 1.8TQM - Manual Boost Control?

First time Audi buyer, doing timing belt, pcv, coolant flange, motor mounts this weekend for maintenance.

Also have K&N air filter, and 710N diverter valve for fun. Plan on doing Revo Stage 1+ or Maestro tune (I am professional programmer) but since I just spent a grand on maintenance items this week, it will be a month before I can do the tune.

Have seen many manual boost controllers and thought it would be a cheap way to dial up the fun but I do not have boost gauge (yet...) and was thinking it might be harmful to just do a few turns and see what happens.

Are manual boost controllers a bad element to begin with? Does it work against the engine management system? And, if it is ok, does it need to be done with a boost gauge? Also, I see electric and manual boost gauges. Is it best to have a manual one, or can the electric one give you accurate readings?

Thanks. Very new to this and appreciate any feedback. Anything I can offer to others in return will be reciprocated. Have been a good citizen on other forums and plan on giving back here once I am not so green.
