Hi,
I have a 2002 A4 2.0 petrol. The car is very chuggy and the engine management light flashes when i'm driving. it happened about a month ago and i brought it to a garage and i was told the ignition coil was broken. The mechanic replaced it and it cost me €120, which sounds very expensive for what only took him a few minutes. Is changing a coil something i could do myself? If so, where could i buy these coils? Do they have to be Audi specific coils?

Yes you can do it yourself. No they don't have to be genuine audi coils, just go to any autoparts store and purchase coils for your particular car. The coils are not generic you will need coils that are designed for your car. You will need I think a 10mm socket and a flat head screwdriver to change it. The screwdriver removes the engine cover and the socket removes the nut holding down the coil.

 

make sure they are the revised ones actually did u have your coils replaced by an audi dealership. If not they are under warranty.

No i didnt have it removed by an audi dealer. It was a local garage. I bought the car last August and there were two previous owners. 2 of the coils were replaced in 2007, not sure when the other two were replaced.
Pa4ul when you ask are they the revised ones, what do you mean? Were there improved coils released recently?

I assume I should do this when the engine is off. Do i need to go near spark plugs or any electrics?

 

Also, how do i know which coil is gone? Will it look different to the others?

if you got your car scanned it should specify which cylinder is bad. Other then that the swap is pretty straight forward. http://www.audizine.com/forum/showth...ck-Replacement

i think it goes cylinder 1 at the firewall and 4 at the furthest most front.
