Default bad gas mileage??

i drive an 03 audi a4 1.8t quattro, it's a triptonic. I'm getting around 24-25mpg on the hwy is that normal!? and maybe around 17-15mpg in the city?? i've already done an engine flush, gotten my fuel system flush, new fuel filter, tire pressure is good, my air filter is good, running syn. oil, and i m running 89oct gas. Anyone here getting better gas mileage than me??

i drive about 60-65 on the highway and i keep my display on instant mpg's, so i pay close attention to gas mileage it could be the extra speed possbile but i dont think it would make that much of a difference

A. Use your cruise control when it is safe to do so, even down to 35 mph.
B. Altitude and temperature can be a player.
C. So can wind and other weather.
D. Make sure you're looking at total mpg or average mpg from the overall computer, not from the one-trip computer.
E. Also make sure you're looking at mpg and not kpl or kpg.
F. Vehicle damage can play a part.
G. Air conditioning and engine wear can also be counted on to drop your mpg rate.

So there isn't just one answer, it's a combination of many things. Your biggest help will probably be the cruise control though.

use higher octane gas. your gas door lists 91 as a minimum. i use 91 and average 28 between city and highway.

^^ +1.

You're not using the right gas, put premium in and it should help improve things. Your mileage isn't all that bad, so we're looking at small incremental improvements having a cumulative effect.

- Use premium fuel
- Turn off your HVAC, or switch on econ mode to turn off the compressor. That alone can eat 5-6% of your fuel.
- What weight is yuor oil? I use 0-w30 in my 3.0, which is the recommended OEM weight. Heavier oil may add a bit of drag...its not much, but everything adds up.
- Slow down. 70-75 you won't get your best economy. The EPA figures are done at 55mph or so.
- Are you running the factory wheels and tire sizes? If your wheels are aftermarket they may be significantly heavier than the OEM setup, which adds drag and unsprung weight...costing you gas.

No silver bullet here, its lots of little things that add up.

I would love to get 24-25 on the highway. I have a 2003 3.0 with 80,000 miles and am getting terrible gas mileage. I've averaged about 17 for the last 10,000 miles. I just recently had a full tune up including timing belt, drive belt, spark plugs, air filter, whole nine yards. I also only use synthetic and premium. I usually get abou 230 on a tank of gas and I drive about 50/50 highway to city. On my last fill up I did a manual calculation and it was 16 with over 100 miles of that being highway. I've had the car looked at on a couple of occasions and all I get is how good the car looks. It runs fine except for some rough idle here and there when in gear that no one can seem to explain. I have been getting a purge fault code that comes and goes every couple of weeks that I was told not to worry about because it's probably a loose gas cap. Any ideas?
