I have an 03 avant 1.8t with projector headlights. Short of taking them out how can I tell if they are hid or halogen?

Default Hydraulic Cylinder For Convertible Top

Hi there - new owner first post - 2003 3.0 A4 Convertible - looking for the small hydraulic cylinder that is on the drivers side on the back window part of the roof. It is about 5" long and has a rope at one end.

About to replace Left Front Upper Control Arms on 03', 1.8T. Have about 106K miles. Was wondering if it's a good time to change battery? Had the battery light flash once a couple weeks ago and that was it. Also, does anyone have insight's on when timing belt should be changed? Thanks.

When the battery light flashes it means that the alternator is not working. I've been working with car batteries since I was 8 years old, now I'm 27. My dad runs a car battery store, and trust me, I know! The alternator has 3 diodes, if one of them stop working, then the alternator begins to work only in a 66%, thats why it wont continue flashing after the old battery is replaced. The battery wont receive the charge needed and it will die. Probably, the battery you changed was still good. I recommend you to check the alternator and be sure that is producing about 13.4 Volts when the car is on. After you checked the car with the voltmeter, turn on the lights, the radio and every possible electric stuff ( the car must be turned on )... if the voltmeter shows that the alternator is producing less than 13.4 Volts, then you will confirm that the alternator is not working at a 100%.

Sometimes if the battery is, what we call, crossed (thats when a battery cell gets broke) the battery wont receive more than 10.4 Volts, the alternator wont work at its best. Check both of them. Battery and alternator! Charge the battery... if the battery charges at 12.6 volts or more... install it back in the car and, with the car switched off, turn on your front lights for 2 minutes... check the battery again with the voltmeter.... if the battery has 10.4 Volts or less.... the you got a crossed battery.

The battery has 6 cells... each of them produce about 2.1 volts... thats why the battery is fully charged at 12.6 volts... if the battery has a crossed cell... 2 cells will become one... then, theoretically, it will have only 4 cells. Just do the math. Its easy!

About the timing belt. It should be changed at least at 95k or 100k miles. The owners manual says it.

Take care bro, I hope you can get that fixed.

Default Re: About Audi's battery and timing belt.

@Godrock. Thanks for the insight into the battery issue. I actually got it replaced at Germain Auto Repair specialist. They come very highly recommended. I don't have the requisite skills to do the job myself, but your comments definitely helped. The car seems to float right now. Earlier the engine ran real loud, but it has quieted a bit and the performance is much better. Now if only I could get the creaking noises to stop. I had the upper control arms in my left front suspension replaced. They were worn out and were creaking real bad.

Of course, since the lower one's bear most of weight I have to get those replaced as well. The high mileage is getting to the car, but seems like all the work I'm putting into the car is really paying off I will definitely ask the guys at the shop to check out the alternator and verify the percentage at which it is running. Thanks bro.
