Yeah the 1.8T has a sludging problem, but with regular 5000 mile changes and synthetic oil, I think I might have heard one time at most on here regarding sludge issues of any kind.

I could have missed a few, but diligence and maintenance are well worth it for anything with the 4 rings of approval.

I TOTALLY agree about it being a whole new lifestyle. I would describe myself as you have. THe guy that owned the car before me also had a sludge problem with my car. Audi replace the motor for him under warranty. After they did motor replacement they put the bigger filter (which I HIGHLY recommend) on, ran synthetic threw the motor all the time, and I change the oil every 3,000 miles. In the nine months I've owned my Audi I have had to take it to the dealer 4 times and spent a whooping 2000 bucks in that time frame on little things. I have a friend though that is a mechanic for a living and he works on it for like 40 bucks an hour and has alot of experience with Porches. So find someone like that that knows Audis/ VW's well. But I love my Audi and if you get one you will too. I'm pretty funny about how my car runs but shes the best.

yea and what is unfortunate for me is that i will be getting a car that is a few years old so i dont know what i would be getting myself into. i guess its a risk that i will have to be willing to take because if i do end up with the sludge problem than a new engine i will be having to get. thanks for all the help guys.

Yeah, I bought a 5 year old car and have spent, among the scheduled maintenance at $100-450 a pop (60,000 mile service was in the $475ish ballpark if I recall, look up Edmunds scheduled maintenance and you will see almost to the penny what it will be costing you for your regular scheduled maintenance. Thankfully I was prepared to know that number), I've put about $7000ish into it in unscheduled repairs, plus another $500 on Thursday.

As I've always said, keep a small slush fund.

personaly i love my car but if i had to start all over again i would have never purchased my audi. ive only had it 2 years and its been hell. everything that goes wrong with these cars is so expensive and you can only take it to certain places to get fixed. what i have learned is that never trust anyone but the dealership in my opinion. i used to take it to audi independent shops and they seem like they know what they are talking about but they dont so now i always take it to the dealer. but all n all as of right now i dont like my car i think i need a new axel so now it just sits in my garadge cuz i already know its going to be expensive to get fixed. i think if u can afford the repairs go ahead n get one or get a warranty but if not run away as fast as u can to a japanese car.

I guess it all comes down to how you view not just your car but cars in general. I owe twice what my car books for due to having to finance my transmission job, and I get milked every 5000 miles for service. I don't however, mind this. I see it with the associated rites of passage to owning a high end car. I may bitch and I may complain, but at the end of the day, no matter what my car has done to me, I still love it. And I know that if the day comes when I do something to my car, it will love me just the same by letting me walk away unscathed from any accident I may find myself in.

Basically, if you look at repairs as unexpected bonuses (every time I repair, I upgrade), than you will have the hottest car you've ever been in. If you see them as crippling expenses, well, driving isn't your life. For me, it is. I'll spend anything on the rush that barreling away from a stop light gives.

Go to the wrong Audi stealership and you are looking at more than opening your wallet. And they charge extra for them to use "lube" while doing it to you too.

05, it's only a car nothing special.
When l want to feel the need for speed l go into my garage and uncover my vette!
