Getting Closer to Buying...
...and thanks for all the great advice everyone. I want an automatic transmission, so I'll be avoiding the CVT and sticking with the Quattro.
I found a 2004 1.8T Quattro (automatic) -- dark gray, 85,000 miles -- for $9000. A little dinged up but drives nice. I'll probably buy that, if my local indie Audi specialist gives it the thumbs-up.
But I just found online, and I will check out tomorrow, a 2003 3.0 Quattro (automatic) -- 76,000 miles. Asking $9500, but maybe I can get a little better price. It's dark blue, a color I like a little less than dark gray, but what the hell. I think I'm gonna like the extra power. (I certainly liked the 2003 3.0 FWD I drove. But agh -- CVT!!!!)
Any thoughts anyone? If anyone cares I'll post when I buy!!!

well youre on the right path by sticking with quattro/auto combo...nobody needs to deal with the cvt issues. the 04 1.8t seems to be maybe a LITTLE high priced, especially if it doesnt have a recent timing belt/water pump service. find that out. for that matter, the 3.0 is getting up there too. see if either cars have had that service...itll set you back a little more than a grand from the dealer.
