Arrow Hi all! Looking to buy an Audi possibly today, Good Deal?

Hi every one. I am looking to buy a first car today. Wanted to see what you guys thought, and Can I get some opinions?

2005 Audi A4 1.8T (non-quattro) 113,000 Miles

Automatic, Sunroof and I dont believe it has any kind of Sport package or nothing.

The guy is asking $7,000. What do you think? Opinions? Deal or No deal? Advice?

What should I look out for when checking the car out? Thanks Guys!

IMO that car is a no-go. The reason why is that it's a CVT transmission. (B6 A4 CVTs are known to fail expensively - for more info, check out the sticky thread at the top of the forum on the subject.)

Were it not a CVT, I'd just be advising you to get it inspected and be sure that the timing belt had already been replaced (really should have been done by 75K miles or so, but some people risk waiting, and it's an expensive job).

Well I checked it out, He doesn't know when the timing belt was changed but his mechanic told him it Does look like it was changed before.

Anyway, The transmission is slipping a little. Definitely could tell during test drive. You were right. It felt like it was going to need to be replaced in order for a smooth ride. For right now, Its a to-be continued. But probably a No.

What's the average price to have the transmission replaced on it? am I looking at $2,000-$3,000? $5,000-$6,000?

Thanks in advanced

My (limited) understanding of the CVT problems is that there are two common failure modes:

1) The transmission control module (TCM) dies, and replacing it is ~ $2K
2) The whole thing goes, and replacing it is ~ $7K

Lucky for me, when I was looking for my A4, I was only interested in manual trans Quattros, so the fact that I didn't know about the CVT thing at the time wasn't a problem for me.

Damn. I don't have that to spend right after I would drop 7 on it. And it's pretty obvious one of those two things would need to be done in the near future. I think Imma take a pass. But, test driving it a little did spoil me. First audi I've ever been in. Sure was SEXY! Now I need to find an Audi. Any body here on the forum selling theirs in the DFW area? lol

Well, be prepared that an Audi will cost you money to keep going. I swear, every time something wears out or breaks on mine, it's $500+ to fix it. If you have the ability to do your own labor, you can save a lot, but even just the parts can be pretty pricy.
