Default Huge coolant leak

I was driving on a side road by my house when smoke came out from under my hood.. i pulled over and there was coolant all over the rear of the engine but i have no clue where its coming from etc..

any ideas? i had to have my car towed to a mechanic and leave it there overnight..... anything i could try to fix on my own?.. i don't know where to look.. i've only worked on the front of the motor and changed the starter on this car..

any help would be gr8

I would put money on it being your coolant flange. It's a fairly inexpensive part, but a PITA if you've never done it before.

Edit: I'm assuming you have a 1.8t.

That depends on what they're gonna charge you. The part is like 20 bucks, and will take you, realistically, about 1.5-2 hours.

cost in excess of 300 dollars probably. Maybe even more. but thats where ur smoke is coming from. behind the engine infront of the firewall near the caytalitic converter.

Yes u know how the engine sits on a 1.8 and then there is the battery right behind the engine. Well u are looking inbetween the battery and the engine. Here is a DIY so merry christmas! http://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php?t=189137
