Key Programming (Master & Emergency)
So I've been searching the forums to find a way to program a new set of keys to save me $100 that the dealer is asking for, but I've seen a lot of different solutions that people have offered. I wasn't sure which one to try (and wasn't sure if trying the wrong solution would de-program the current key and/or lock out the new key).
I have a 2003 A4 1.8Q and only have one master key (the switchblade) where the buttons don't work (they are stuck).
I was able to get keysordered froma local dealer for one master key and one emergency key which cost around $210. When I received the keys the master key was in two pieces (see the pictures below).
Just had a few questions that hopefully someone can help me with:
- Does the emergency key also need to be programmed?
- Does the dealer do anything special when putting the keys two pieces together, or can I just snap them together?
- Can I still program the new master key even though the buttons on the one that I already have don't work?
- What are the steps in programming the key(s)?
Sorry if this is a repeat question, I just couldn't find anything on the forums that had a similar situation I had. Any help would be great! Thanks!

I don't think the emergency key will start the car, I believe it is only good to open the door.
I suspect you need to put a battery in that new remote, that's why it's not snapped togeather.
You can try to initialize the key using the standard procedure listed in the manual and here a few posts back, but you may need to use a VAG-COM, finda VW/AUDI ownerlocal to you that has one to save the dealer $$.

Just an update - I was able to get my keys programmed in Michigan (drove there for a trip) and it cost me $50 to get it programmed there. They also fixed my old keys for $20 which replaced the button face and the battery.
The emergency key was able to start the car as well.

I imagine the emergency key will only start the car if one of the other keys is nearby. It would be interesting to try that before you count on it. I don't know for sure as I don't have the emergency key.
