Lightbulb Looking to buy

New to this forum.
As of this moment I'm seeking some advice. I found nice looking 02 A4 3.0 engine with auto transmission. Seller is asking 3K for it. The bad news about this car is it has broken timing belt (133K on the engine) his mechanic told him he has bent valves. Is it worth getting it and paying so much for it, if NO what would be reasonable offer? If i go with rebuilding engine is it worth it or better off with buying used engine? If i go with buying used engine will i need to swap ECU?

Thanks in advance

By the time you are done you will have enough $ into it that you could have just bought one with a good motor. I would keep looking. There are plenty of them out there in the $6k-7k range.

I would pass. Who knows what else is wrong, especially if the previous owner did not bother to change the TB and that's why it broke. They probably did not bother to do other required maintenance. My daughter has a 2003 A4 3.0 MT6 with 92k miles that we bought four years ago for $13k. I suspect it would sell in the $6-8 range now and I can tell you, it is in excellent shape but not for sale. Keep looking.
