Main differences between B6 and the B5?
I am looking to get another car here soon, I am thinking A4. I know much about the B5 platform, but nothing about the B6. I know it weights more and has more toys inside. Also reading more issues with the toys and getting them to work correctly. You still have the oil issue on the 1.8T, but yet know nothing about the 3.0L. I do know the 2.8L was a great motor and was shocked they toke it away.
What were some of the things that made you love the B6 ?
Is the CA's still a major issue ?
1.8T vs 3.0L (I know 1.8T to mod and more HP then V6) ?
Hows the 6 speed vs 5 speed ?
Any other major issues with the B6?
Thanks guys, you drive them and know them.

Well i don't own a B6, but i've been under the hood of thousands of them.
First and for most, the 3.0L was a mistake. Audi should have never released that engine.
Its the hardest engine to work on, the parts costs are extremely high, and there have been several failures internally in the engine. I would say even if you used synthetic oil it would literally last half as long as a 2.8L engine would.
The 1.8T on a B6 has more tuning options than it does on the B5, including REVO. Yes it weighs more, but the suspension and tires are wider giving it a better center of gravity.
The 6 speed transmission is also stronger than the 5 speed is.
No major issues for the B6, except for a fuel pump recall.

Thank you,
I have done a few 2.8L Timing belts and the 1.8T, but when I read the write up on the 3.0 I crapped my paints. So the fuel rail, nothing with the TB and sticking open? I really love the look of the B5 and your S4 I would died for
Really started thinking of getting a B5 and pay 3,300.00 and drop a 2.7T into it, but would just like a newer car model. Anything else?

Yes the 3.0L timing belt job is a nightmare, you should try changing cylinder heads! [:'(]
Dropping a 2.7T in an A4 is no where near cost efficient, supporting mods like brakes, transmission, tuning, mounts, exterior body modification ect. will round up much more than $3,300.
Well since no one else is chimming in, the interior of the B6 is much more comfy IMO.
Seat heaters heatyour back as well as your bum, VS just the bottom heater of the B5.
More air bags, bigger brakes, more gadgets, better stereo, factory XM or Sirius option, and less road noise.

So wider set-up...does this mean the ride height is lower on the B6 for better center of gav.?
Its about 1/2 lower than the B5, plus the stock tires are lower profile.
The sport suspension models are evenlower, still, a good coilover set up is needed for track like handling.

i really hate it how a lot of people **** on the 3.0's. people seem to hate it because it can't be modded, but not everyone wants to mod the engine. the big thing that people hate about the 3.0 is how hard it is to change the timing belt, yet its costs just a lil more then the 1.8t for a shop to do it.
the 1.8t has a tendency to build engine sludge, didnt see auditech79 mention that. i understand your a certified technician but an audi in general is going to cost a lot to maintain, the 1.8t and the 3.0 are no exception.
Correct me if im wrong but the 6 speed transmission is only available on the 3.0, 5 speed for the 1.8t. if its a tiptronic(automatic) then they both get a 5 speed.
pson, personally i think the B6 looks so much better then the B5. interior is nicer too.
and no one take anything personally, just defending the 3.0's, someones gotta do it

1.8T engines can get a 6 speed as an option, standard on the ultrasport models.
I almost bought a 3.0L A4 ultrasport, but after doing 20 sets of cat converters on them, it kinda went sour for me. Especially since the cats cost $1,000 a pop.
1.8T engines develop sludge, but you only have to change a $20 oil pick up tube to fix it, and if you use seafoam it shouldn't be a problem.

I know all about the V6 vs 1.8T. The 1.8T does have major sludge issues and dropping the pan with auto RX would fix that. What kind of MPG do you get in the 3.0L? Also is that true that only the 3.0L has the 6 speed? How about gaskets? Which tend to leak and how hard is it to replace them? I know the 1.8T and 2.8L very well.
Tech,
I would most likely put HR sports with Koni's...was thinking CPP arms or something like a K-mac to correct the camber issue. If a 1/2 lower then the ride height adjustment for the CA wouldn't be 47mm and couldn't use those numbers to adjust the drop for the HR's. Guess the spec before the install will help...lol.
Thanks again for the information guys
