Need Help buy a4
i am getting sick of my current car and i think it is time for a new one. I have always liked audis so i thought it would finnally be time to get one.
I have been shopping around for quite a while ( almost 6) and i found this 2002 a4 1.8t manual. The only options that i know it has are the heated front seats, all the maintance has been done up to date. He is asking for 10,500 and which is quite high because kbb say it is at 8500 and i read this article that said kbb price are based off a good economy so right now most of the prices that it gives are 10-15% higher then what they should be. So it would be around 7 grand...
Is this way to low? Also this car can has been for sale since i started looking which is like i said almost 6 month i have feeling he is getting tired of trying to sell his and will be easier to negotiate with but i might be wrong.

At that value im assuming it has high miles? These cars get really expensive when they get old and have high miles. Can you work on your own cars? That helps, but parts can still be pricey, and they break quite frequently. I know these cars are tempting bc you can get them cheap, but theres a reason for that. After having my 02 for 3 years i would advise against buying one unless you have high income/want to do some modding and simplify some things and replace things that break often.
If he's been trying for 6 months, then feel free to offer a lowball, and substantiate it with your little bits of evidence. Can't hurt.
Some people are dreaming when they post prices.
I saw an ad the other day for a nearly brand new car "Paid 52k a week ago, save $2000!"
Like... sorry sucker, you're gonna lose more than 2k in the new-to-used transition.
:P

haha yea i see ads like that all the time
it has 80,000 thousand miles which isnt too high for a car of that year
also i have a friend that has had his 03 a4 for about a year know and i haven't heard him complain about the car.
How many times has something gone wrong with your car shane in the 3 years that you have owned it?

Seriously about once every 2 months, sometimes more. There was a thread recently where I posted some of my service records. Luckily my car was under warranty for most of it. Another problem is interior quality, things break or wear quickly.
My car just turned 81k. There are things to replace here and there but as a male, I love working on my car and don't mind one bit. I love driving it.
If you continue to pursue that car, ask if the timing belt has been done. They were due at 100k but Audi is checking them sooner and we're getting them done earlier due to the plastic impeller on the water pump going and causing the timing belt to break/slacken causing you're engine to go boom (did mine at 75k and was sure to use new metal impeller water pump design). If it hasn't been done, it can be done for ~$750 at a Euro shop. While looking at the car, feel around behind the block to see if coolant is leaking out of the rear coolant flange. That's a DIY and not a big deal, just a good indicator of care and maintenance on it versus common B6 problems. Confirm he's always used synthetic oil and the oversized oil filters, that's a must due to potential sludge issues with our 1.8.
I think $10.5k is high but 4cylinder cars are hot now. Base your offer on answers to the items above.

Shanes advice is correct. Don't buy unless you are mechanically inclined or rich.
I own a 1.8T 2003 purchased at 62K now at 74K. Lots of issues from skipping tranny, heating, a/c, check valves, idling, interior noise, jammed cup holders, faulty gauges etc
These cars are appealing coz they look good and handle well but are not worth it if you cannot afford one thats still under warranty...
My advice, swallow your pride and buy a camry
