New to Forum, 1.8 or 3.0

Im new to the forum, Im in the process of looking for a B6. Ive noticed that the 1.8t are very common, why are the 3.0's in the minority? I want one that i can tune up and make a fast daily drive. Ive been looking on autotrader and found one that seems nice, just need to know what engine to go with. Here it is.

So if you could just give me some info on both as well as the good and the bads.

Thanks!

There are so many 1.8s bc theyre cheaper. You cant do a whole lot with the 3.0 when it comes to tuning so if thats your plan get the 1.8.

Okay, Would i be able to change the air intake, headers, ignition, exhaust easily? Thats all i have in mind.

Changing intake doesnt help much. I havent heard of headers. Ignition can be changed with a chip, a chip for the 3.0 will give less than 10 hp, the 1.8 chip will give about 30. Exhausts are expensive and are usually cat backs, but they dont help much if you dont have forced induction.

Go to neuspeed or ecstuning and price those mods for a 3.0 and a 1.8 then see where each car would be performance wise at the end.

Thanks, Ill go ahead and do that. In your opinion, what would you go with?

The 3.0 is an executive car imo, good for touring. The 1.8 is the one to go with if you want to tune. If i was planning to do performance mods i would go with the 1.8.

Chipping my car soon (I know I have been going on about it for the longest time, $$$ finally coming in this month to do it though...), and I'll go from 170HP/166lb-ft to 245HP/275lb-ft with APR and injectors, and a very similar power band.

Can you get that high with just chip/injectors or similar on a 3.slow? It's looking to be about $850 all said and done with injectors and ECU flash.

+1 on the 3.0 as a touring car though, heated rear seats for the win. I'm cruising junkyards/parts sites to see if I can jack the parts at low cost to see how easy a swap would be, Vermont winters can be cold...

Shane,
Yes go with the 1.8t. I have a 3.0, and don't get me wrong I love my car, but I really wish I would of grabbed a 1.8t instead. 3.0s don't have many tuning options. Some particulars though you have to be sure of when getting the 1.8t...make sure you get a quattro with manual transmission.

1.8T if your a tuner, and like to get your hands dirty.

3.0 if you see yourself only doing minor mods, like exhaust and intake.

Cant forget leo536's good words, make sure you get Quattro and manual (Quattro being the more important, in my own little world). I could drive an automatic again, but I will never go back to front wheel drive; but otherwise, I am in full agreement.
