Default new here, bmw vs A4 vert questions

Hi All-

This looks like there is a ton of great info here. I have read a few stickies.

My wife currently drives an 02 330 vert. When the weather is inclement in the winter, she always asks to drive my car (outback). Next winter this may not be an option, I may need the awd capability.

With that said, I am considering an A4 quattro cab. Does the a4 offer the same quality and handeling as the bimmer?

From doing a serach it looks like I don't want a CVT trans, is this offered in the quattro? If so how do I know how to identify it?

Are the maint / repair costs the same?

appreciate the input.
John

Quattro would not be cvt. The car will handle as well as a bmw, but you will probably have more little things go wrong. There are a lot of little things that go wrong with these cars, and the timing belt needs to be done by 85 or 90k to be safe. Do you have any idea of year/engine you're thinking of?

Audi's have a ton of problems. mine is sitting in the shop right now. I have been driving my M3 around and dont mind that the audi is sitting.. other than the price it is going to be to fix it....

Have an 2005 Avant 3.0 and a 330 Convert ZHP

The Audi with Quattro is my 3rd Audi so I like them in general however in general do not have not the 'sport' of the BMW. I call the BMW a 1 pebble car the Audi a 2 pebble car. Audi requires more maintenance in general but overall both are costly to keep running.

If snow is a factor the Audi wins period and between the two converts you could be happy in either one unless performance is the priority. When we bought the BMW the choice was between a 3.x Audi and a 330 BMW. As the car ended up mine not the wifes I liked the extra pep and tighter suspension on the BMW. FWIW the Bose in the Audi is better than the HK sound system in the BMW if that matters.

No brakes are about the same - both expensive but all Audi's have timing belts which require change every 60K or so depending on model and that is a big $ service. BMW's don't they use timing chains which do not typically require any on going maintenance. One both Audi's [96 A6 / 97 A4] that I have had for long term >100K I have had to replace the seals where the drive shaft comes out of the trans. Nothing super major just stuff that happens. I don't know when/if the seal on the current A4 will need to be replaced as it is low mileage at this point <50K.
