Default oil consumption

What is "normal" oil consumption for a 2004 a4 1.8t with 67,000 miles? I recently checked my oil after driving 5300 miles and it was down a quart. Yesterday I had my car inspected and had them do an oil change and check for leaks(independent dealer). They checked the pcv valve and looked around and could not find a leak. The mechanic advised me to contact the dealer as this is a known problem. He also told me a story of an a4 owner getting a new motor with similar situation.

This does not seem normal to me as it never happened until now. Will the dealer charge me to diagnose the problem? Any info or experiences with this appreciated.

Thanks

You should change your oil every 3000-4000 miles anyways.

I don't mean to sound like a smarta but I wasn't asking how often to change the oil. I am aware of the issues these cars have with oil sludge but they way i look at it is this...Audi recommends 10,000 miles so if I do it every 5-6kand have proof of this i do not see it as a problem. But then again, I could be wrong. A while back my dealer said oil issues are covered as long as you have proof of changes within 10,000 miles and use a synthetic oil, which I do.

Any info for the asked question greatly appreciated.

There are known problems with the gaskets leaking so that could be culprit. I can't remember how many of mine are slowly leaking. What all did they check?

You either have a bad pcv system and the oil is pooling in the ic and going into the intake or you are just burning off oil. Take off the bumper and drain the ic of oil and clean the TB and add in a catch can if needed. If you are still losing oil you are consuming it, 1 qrt for over 5k miles isnt to bad. Just make sure next time you add more in after a while so you dont run low. BTW, i go 6-7k between changes

Also, turbo might be leaking.

How do you check/clean the pcv?

Its a little tube that goes ontop of the engine (underneath the audi cover), and you can't clean it. You got to replace it every year for better fuel economy.
