Default P1071 P1296 Error Codes Need Help

I'm picking up two error codes. Reset once and came back on. P1071 says too lean and the P1296 has something to do with the air mass sensor (I believe). I've tried to research the potential reasons why these are coming on. Some people have suggested the O2 sensor while others have suggested a vacuum leak.

The error code first showed up when starting the car in -6 degree weather. Not sure if that had anything to do with it.

Car is an 02 A4 1.8 APR Stage 1 plus. 82K miles.

Is there a way to narrow the problem down? If anyone has thoughts or ideas as to whats causing the codes, it would be great to hear from you.

A lot of guys here have had problems with their mass air sensors getting dirty.* They have said its especially prone to happening if you have an oiled air filter such as a K&N.* Try cleaning the mass air sensor then clear the codes and see if they come back.*

Default CEL on and off - error codes - air mass filter

Additional information. I haven't had time to clean the air mass filter sensor yet. One thing I find odd is the CEL will be on for a couple of days and then go off. Is this common?

Thanks for the help
