Default Po420

Cant seem to find many post dealing with code Po420 or about the catalytic converter. Any help would be appreciated. Ok so i took the car to the mechanic with the po420 code he said the car was still driveable but for smog check it would not pass. A new cat was the assesment after a a quick check. Im tired of poring tons of money in to this car (so far $10,000). Is there an easy bolt on cat. I live in the restrictive, tree hugging state of california. An will I cause any damage to the car if i continue to drive it unfixed. Also any suggestions, links, diagramps, how tos on replacing cat.

erase the code and see if it comes back... maybe there is nothing wrong...
any OEM cat is calfornia state friendly.
you can buy a highlow cat... u shouldnt have any check engine lights on, but not sure about the sniffer test though.
