Default Rear passenger "rattle" sound.......????

Hello all,

Maybe someone can help....I have a bit of a banging noise or rattle coming from the rear passenger side - more towards the truck area or near the rear springs. Best to describe the sound as two loose pieces of metal taping off each other.

It's a 2002 A4 3.0 - I had my wife listen for the noise yesterday (lowered the passenger side seat and remove the trunk cover) as I thought the noise was coming from the trunk itself (loose jack or such).

But it seems the noise is coming from under the car....near rear passenger wheel or in that area....it's really heard to tell.

I crawled under but everything seems tight - nothing loose that I can see.

It only happens when I hit a bump in the road that's neat that area of the car.....

Looking for stuff to check....

Cheers

only thing there that would rattle and wouldnt affect anything else such as drivability is the muffler. you have a 3.0 so you have dual exhaust, if i am correct.

Kinda hard to diagnose a sound through the internet. Soo... take a video of it or you can just keep checking around the area that you think are loose. Have you had any work done on the car that may not have been installedcorrectly to cause rattle? I know that happened to my rotor shields when I did my rear brakes

I'm having the same exact problem in an 03 3.0L. Sound coming from rear passenger side when you hit a bump. Let me know if you figure out what it is!

Just thought I would update all on the noise ...

Seems the rear right spring is cracked

Checking around for prices........This sounds expensive.

Cheers

Did you have it checked out or did you diagnose yourself? If so what did you look for?

Had it checked out.....now have a price.

Springs are dealer only $150 each - recommend you do both side.

Labor is 2.5 hours @ $72.50 local

About $480 before tax.

I was shown the spring and were it was cracked...in fact the small piece that was rattling was removed....the spring is still there fine but recommended that I fix it as soon as possible.

You can see the spring from the rear when the car is up...look above the suspension near the wheels. Mine was rusted

Cheers

Thanks for the info, I'll have to give that a look. How many miles do you have?

I have the same problem in my '04 3.0 quattro but the noise dissappears when you engage the brakes. If I'm going through bumpy roads the noise sounds like a thin piece of metal loose in another one. Now this is my first Audi so I only have experience with american cars, I know the heat shield on chevys is rather easy but I couldn't figure it out on the Audi, it seems to be on the wheel solid but I didn't inspect it that close. So any ideas or suggestions on how to check it? thanks.
