I am looking at getting a proper sports car, but I am torn between a used B6 S4 with 50ish K on it vs a new GTI. I know they are VERY different, but what do you guys think would be a better idea? I expect to keep the car for a very long time, so cost, dependability, and practicality are very important.

GTi can be made faster than the S4. S4 has status and nicer interior. S4 however sucks on gas mileage. S4 has the beautiful exhaust tone.
Tough call depending on what you want. Apples to oranges here.

I would take the S4 hands down.

 

A "proper" sports car is more in the M3, S5, and that type of body style. We have luxury sport sedans and the GTI is more of a compact sports hatch. The GTI is easy to be made quick and the S4 is all around a great package. But if you need something economical and easy on the pocket get the VW, although I would get the S4 hands down...

 

S4 clearly makes a statement. With a GTI your just another guy w/a hatch, that pops a woody every time you'll see a hooked up Audi.

 

True to kwik u will drool if u get a gti and see an s4 and think damn coulda had that. S4 hands down.

 

GTI comparable to the s3 IMO. even still, i'd get the A3 =) cmon man this is an audi forum, not a VW forum. what else do you expect us all to like hahaha

 

well i had a nice gti an older one and ive drivin the s4, and have the s4 motor in my a6 witch is my favorite combo. but ya gti agaisnt s4 no comparison hatch backs are for rice boys we drive real cars.

1) He's talking about the B6 S4 which has the 4.2 V8. You have the A6 with the 2.7t, which is a B5 motor, not the same he's talking about.

2) There's nothing rice about a hatch. Are you calling A2's and A3/S3's krauts as well??? Or are Avants ricey because they're a bigger hatch/wagon? I don't think so. Don't toss around the word "rice" at anything that is different, that's why a lot of the JDM and other TRUE enthusiasts compare us to BMW owners as stuck-up, ignorant a$$holes
