Default Timing belt advise

Ok, so I just bought a 2004 A4, 1.8 auto with 37k on it.

I would love some informed advice on if I should be looking to have the timing belt replaced on it.

Im thinking that even thought the car only has 37,000 miles on it.... it being 11 years old really, I would imagine the TB is showing some signs of age more than wear.

thoughts??

in my maintenance book, it shows that the timing belt replacement should be done at 105k miles. my mechanic says to do it every 75k miles. with 37k miles, i wouldn't say it is an immediate need but i would definitely look into replacing the timing belt before 55k miles, although the timing belt usually just gets worn after driving use. i have a 2005 and mine was replaced at 55k miles then again at 125k miles.

i guess in the end its whether your ready or not for the expense for when it snaps.

timing belt should be done at 80,000k U should replace your thermostat and waterpump while you are in there and inspect your hoses and vaccum lines for any problems that might arrise later.

thanks guys

I suppose I assumed that due to the age of the belt I should probably be looking at replacing it relatively soon.

I probably wont push it and try to get it done in the fall or something. Really is just peace of mind.

Lets face it... im thinking it was a granny that owned the car before me averaging 3400 miles a year??? Now I have it and am going to do somewhere around 20k a year....

Do take a good look at the tires. with that mileage and granny driving I'm sure it is the original rubber. big brother is working on laws that limit tire age in safety inspections to six years siting possible separation of tread/dry rot. Would be worth taking to a tire dealer and get a balance/rotation and see what they say.

+1 to nice find! And I agree, while I wouldn't say the TBelt is a need to do quickly based just on age, I would do it sooner than later just so you know where it all stands. Along with waterpump and thermostat.

i actually didnt realize that the tires are actually the originals. They have plenty of tread on them, but do have some dryrot. I called the dealer about it and they said that they passed their initial safety inspection. I qouted the manual which says tires over 6 years old cannot be considered safe and must be replaced.

Im taking the day off tomorrow to go back to the Audidealer so they can put4 new tires on it.... no cost to me.

As far as the TB... i found a local Audi/VW specialist garage that will do a complete service for $900 with tensioner, waterpump, thermostat, serpentine belt, and a few other things i cant remember.

But yes, I am very happy with the car. I couldnt believe when i found it on the dealer website... at an Audi dealer no less. I guess some lady traded it in for a brand new A4, white, gray int.... same exact car just 10 years newer. If they took $9,000-- they must have stolen it from the old lady.... ohhh well, her loss my gain
