Default Tire Pressure.

My car gets around 280 miles to a tank which is pretty bad in my eyes. So i called the dealer near me and they said first thing i should do is check my tire pressure, and put it to the pressure on the tire. The psi on the tire says 49. But i checked the inside of my door hinge and it says 30. i checked and it's at a 30. I put it up to 49 psi. Did i do the right thing? Should i bring it back down and could it be something else thats wrong with it?

49? seems a little high but if your tires say 49 I guess its ok

The tire pressure u should run is on the door jam. The psi on the tire is a maximum you should put in the tire.

49 is going to get u a blow out and a nice trip to the dealer for a set of new pzero tires. I noramlly keep my tires around 30 to 35 and 35 is kinda getting up there. Do u have any cells on in your car? My first guess at bad gas mileage is filter plugs oil change and the right type of fuel.

I run the Pirellis on both my A6 and an A4 3.0 at 36 psi. It's near the top of the range, but both cars do a lot of highway driving and I want to minimize flex and heat build up. Both cars get 375-400 miles per tank under normal driving, which is mostly highway. It would be ~50 less for intown. A lot of things can contribute to poor gas mileage: dirty plugs or air filter, tune, emissions problems, and driving style and conditions.

280 is very low for a tank. I've got as much as 450 but usually in the 380-420 range with 80% highway driving. I can't see tires having that much affect on mileage but I would stay in the 30-35 psi range. you put the full 49 in and you will feel every pebble and crack in the road and likely suffer from poor traction while riding on just the center stripe of the tire.

if you don't have any CEL I would start with the basics: Air filter, oil change, plugs and coolant temp sensor.

What is your driving style? Aggresive, foot down all the time? City driving, highway?

Well, 280 miles is pretty low but what B6 do you have? 1.8T or 3.0? Quattro? All those things can make a big impact on you gas consumption.

I have a 3.0 Quattro and I get around 320 miles with a tank! Hope that helps you a little

1.8t.

Turns out i needed an oil change really bad. I was at 50-60 miles after a quarter tank.
So i'll see if that helped. I also put my tires back down to like 40.
