Default Transmission Issue - Please help

Hi folks,

I have a 2002 Audi A4 Avant (Wagon) 1.8t Quattro with a TIP (automatic transmission).

It's got 118,000km (73,750 miles) on it.

When I'm driving the vehicle and going 30 km/h (20 mph) or faster and take my foot off the gas, you can hear a "whining" noise coming from the engine area. The noise is not super loud but not super faint either. Initially, I thought it was just engine noise. Nonetheless, I decided to take the car into the local Audi dealership (Open Road Audi, Vancouver, BC, Canada) as passengers have been asking me what that noise is. The car has been making this noise for at least one year.

The local Audi dealership diagnosed the noise from coming from the gears in the transmission. They said they wouldn’t open the transmission and figure out where the issue is because labour is expensive and it would be a trial and error process. Instead, they would slap in a re-built tranny for $5800 + taxes. I almost had a heart attack with the news and the price tag!The car has been driving well and they’re telling me it needs a new tranny after relatively low mileage. I’m not sure if I can trust the dealerships recommendation because they are a new dealership and I’m not sure how experienced their techs are.

Key details:
- There are NO check engine lights on.
- The car drives fine and shifts fine despite the noise. (no jolting, no juttering)
- The car goes into gear without any issue.
- The car has been well looked after (serviced per the maintenance schedule) and not bagged on

I have searched this B6 forum but can’t find any posts that are similar to the issue I’m having. I tried searching for transmission, CVT, TCM and differential.

I was reading the service manual and it never talks about flushing and replacing the transmission oil. It only says check for leaks in the transmission at various stages in the maintenance schedule.

As a first step, should I get the tranny oil flushed and replaced? Is this a job for the Audi dealership or a regular oil change shop? I am not saavy enough to replace it myself.

I would really appreciate it if anyone can point me to related posts or recommend next steps.

Does anyone know of a independent mechanics or shops that are very experience with Audi transmissions and differentials in the Vancouver, BC (lower mainland) area?

Thanks in advance for the help.

take it to a indipendent transmission shop and have them look at it, then go from there, a used transmission is about 1500 to 3000 you can get them at transmission rebuilding places

Are you sure its the tranny? Amazing how the dealership says they don't want to go into the engine but willingly replace your tranny for 6k so easily. hows your serpentine belt? I remember when my car made some whining noises it was because of the belt.

Oops forgot to say I would suggest you going to a trusted mechanic to diagnose the problem, if you dont any ideas for one, ask a buddy or neighbour but do not go to the regular oil change shop, because all they can do is "change oil", im sure someone can lead you to one.

does it sound like a train coming from far away... kind of like a horn from miles away???? cause if it is, then audiprotein is right the dv valve is going bad, i know that becuase it happened to me. change it anyway and see what happens because its inexpensive and it should be changed anyways after some time.... getthe APR R1 dv valve its better and lasts longer.

Hey audiprotein,

I forgot to mention that I have Forge 007 DV installed in the car.I got it installed when I had the ECU re-programmed with the APR stage I software. RPI Equipped suggested that I replace the stock DV when I got the APR stage I software because the stock DV can go bad especially with the re-programming.

Could the Forge 007 DV be on it's way out? I thought these DV's were rock solid. Does the Forge 007 DV just make this noise normally?

thx!

Yeah, u are suppose to upgrade your dv when u get a chip. Forge 007 might make that sound when you are in boost.
You saying that you have no problems with your transmission, and this has been happening for the last year, so i dont think it could be some trans problem, but hey, im not a technician like those guys at the dealership.
Do u feel like u loose some power sometimes when trying to accelerate? Cause one of the hoses might have a leak and air coming out from it makes that sound.
questions for u:
Do u hear that happening in any gear after 20mph? Or it happens only in a specific rpms range?
Opem the hood and ask some to step on a gas, try to listen to that sound.
If u get a chance, put a different DV and see whats gonna happen.

Hey Audiprotein, I did have a leak in one of my hoses about a year ago. It totally caused lack of power and the car made a "hissing" sound under acceleration.

The sound that I'm getting now is more of a whinning noise.

I will have to try out your suggestions about trying to reproduce the noise under different gears and also in park (not under load).

cheers!
