what would you do if this was your car? SERIOUS REPLIES PLEASE
i'm remaining positive until i receive the call tomorrow.
my car ran out of oil and ran for about 5 minutes after it started to act up.
my oil light was broken and had a speedy leak.
i immediately put 4 quarts of 5-30 in it to hold it over until i could get it to the shop which was three mins away.
anyway, i'm trying to remain positive about the situation.
mechanic thinks either i have grim and dirt buildup or it's just shot. i doubt the later because i live in the city and usually that grim and dirt buildup is from country road type places.
my car/engine runs but shakes and ticks lowly. no jackhammering sounds.
however, he wants to charge me $450 to check my oil crank case and oil pan.
ha ha ha ha.
yeah right.
so i'm going to have him check my rod bearings instead as these are usually the first to go. (if you have any othe suggestions of things to check let me know).
anyway. after all is said and done, i need to decide what to do.
i still owe on my car and anticipate that i won't have it paid off until late next year: 2003 audi a4 1.8T less than 70K miles
if this were you, would you:
a. part it out
b. buy a rebuilt motor
c. other?
any advise you have is great.
i just want other opinions of audi owners.
thanks guys

Well 1st off i would get a second opinion from a different mechanic, then once you know what the real problem is for sure, decide what to do.
^^lol you beat me too it... throw some sawdust in the crankcase to quiet down the tick and fillerup with oil just before you pull into the dealership, and make sure its rainin out
i went ahead and called around to see if i could get a good deal on a new engine if i do need one.
i'm not going to have it rebuilt if i do need another one.
i was quoted $3695 (ship includ) from here: shokan.com for a used engine with 58k miles
approx 6k (calling back with exact price) on reman engine

I would definitely look at it as an excuse to upgrade to a b7 2.ot... I have the same car and thats what I would do. Don't tell the dealership about it at first. They screw people over all the time...(first hand experience)....
Def. get a 2nd opinion. Thats rule of thumb for anything.
My buddy just got an 05 A4 1.8T, but apparently the 1st an only owner drove it 41,000 miles and gave it 2 oil changes or so. I really don't know how the car held up. The dealer sent the car in or told Audi about this, and my friend got a brand new motor and turbo put in, at no cost to him. Im not sure how much it cost the shop, but now he's driving an '05 with 41 on the chassy and 0 on the motor. Parting it out would be a good idea, but that requires a lot of time and dealing with many other people.
