1 for all you DIY oil changers!
Ok guys. Just finished my 2nd DIY oil change in my 2008 A4 Cabriolet 2.0T.
First time I didn't really pay much attention as to how much oil I was able to replace. This time I did.
After letting it drain for over 30 minutes I replaced 4100 ml (4.1 liters). I bought a 5 qt. (US) jug which is 4.73 liters or 4730 ml. I had 600ml left after filling so that's where I get the 4100ml (4730ml minus 600ml ~ 4100ml = 4.1 liters.
The manual says the cars capacity is 4500ml or 4.5 liters to fill it.
So I was short about 400 ml or .4 liters.
As we all do, we try to get as much oil out as possible.
So here's some questions. Is this typical or do you guys think I didn't get all the old oil out?
The method I used was to use race ramp to raise the front up and get under the car that way.
Does having the car tilting (front 10 inches higher than rear) not allow some oil to drain? It seems like it would help given where the drain plug is.
I checked the oil level as per the manual, which is to get the oil to temp and then wait 2 minutes, and read the dip stick. Car was on level ground.
Also, I filled it to where it showed the maximum oil level and it still only took 4.1 liters as opposed to 4.5 liters.
Maybe these 5 qt. jugs are not filled exactly.
Maybe this is just normal.
Answer, opinions, guesses welcome.

i wouldnt think twice about it as long as the oil coming out is clean (free of metal and debris) and your engine is running fine. if youre using the same high quality synthetic oil each time then i dont think it would hurt to have a lil old oil left behind.
do the oil filters drain back into the case when engine is off? If not, start your engine and let it run for a bit and allow oil to saturate the filter. There's your 4.5 qts. They probably mean 4.5 quarts with filter change.
Unless you flush the engine out you will never get all the old oil out and even then you might not get all the "old" oil out. just to many area in an engine for oil to cling to. That isn't an issue as long as you get a majority out.
yea i knew there was something i couldnt think of... the oil filter. that housing holds a ton of oil inside it, even when jacked up (i usually do the passenger side).
i got the filter drain tool online and it helps avoid dumping oil all over the car and driveway.
but the OP says he ran the engine and then checked the level, maybe the numbers are just off somewhere.
