Default 2.0T Timing belt @ 75k - Has Audi changed their mind again?

Just dropped my car off for some other work and asked about the 75k mile service (I'm at 70k right now). The service advisor gave me a quote for the standard interval service and then said the timing belt is also due. I pushed back and said Audi had changed it, but she insisted that it's 75k. Anyone else hearing this from Audi dealerships?

On the plus side, she quoted me around $1100 for the full package including water pump, so I feel their price is pretty good. I'll probably call around a bit to get some quotes, but my guess is that by the time I factor inhaving to either rent a car or suffer through with only one vehicle for a few days, it'll be worth having this done at the dealership (they'll give me a loaner for free).

Most of us here on the forums stick to around 60,000 intervals. I've heard anywhere from between 60k and 80k so this is normal. And the price of $1,100 from a dealer is about what to expect for the job.

Unless you know of a good independent Audi/VW shop around you, I would just have the dealer take care of it. You could be asking for trouble if you take it to a place that only works on Fords and Chevys as the norm.

No, I've got a good German-focused indie shop--they know what they're doing and I'll give them a chance to quote it as well. I was just surprised to hear such a low price from the dealership when I'd heard of others quoted much higher.

I have to look at the letter, but I'm pretty sure a while back they sent me a notice that the manual was wrong and they were updating the service interval for the timing belt to 100k. I've never heard of anyone doing it every 60k around here--that's just crazy.

Just wondered if they suddenly started seeing a bunch of failures and went back on it. If they did, they never sent me another letter.

Last week my dealer said 110,000 miles for the 2008 2.0. The 1.8 is still 75,000 miles I think.

The dealer quoted $1700 for the timing belt/water pump thing for the 2008.

I will go by my service book which says 75tmls. German A4 2.0T are around 110-120tkm (75-85tmls) so pretty close. Better safe than sorry...

A lot of folks received letters indicating the service book is wrong.

Now if you are more comfortable changing them more often, nothing wrong with that.

Dealers here are saying that swapping 2.0T timing belts more often than 100,000 miles or so is a waste of money.

There was a misprint. The manual says 75,000 miles. It was corrected to 115,000 miles, and a year or two ago backed down to 110,000 miles. If you go to the Audi website and look up your model year, you will see that the B7 2.0t is 110,000 miles. I just had mine changed out at 108,500 miles. Since 75,000 miles and 115,000 km are the same, I think someone editing the manual, saw the 115,000 miles thinking that was wrong, and thought that it was the km number mislabeled miles, and converted it to 75,000 miles not knowing they messed it up instead of fixed it.

Thanks for the tip about checking their website. I printed out the sheet for my car and if they try and tell me again to do it at 75k, I'll wave it under their nose and tell them they're wrong.

I think I'm also going to tell them to suck it when it comes to the $550 they want to do two different fuel system "services" and a complete brake fluid flush. I'm also going back to 10k mile oil change intervals. They've been telling me to change it every 5k, but Audi still says every 10k, so that's what I'm doing going forward.

In general, they've been pretty fair and straightforward for a dealership, but maybe that's changed recently.

Thanks for the tips.

i did my 07 at 100k,
tensioners and belt seemed perfectly good still.
thermostat looked warped, and water pump seemed fine, though im glad i replaced the plastic impeller wp with the metal one.

ill wait till at least 200k to do it again.

I've always changed the oil every 5000. Something about the 10,000 gives me an uneasy feeling. With the cars history of cam follower failure, I would always want fresh oil in the engine. The additives that protect at startup, do degrade over time, or sacrifice themselves to protect the engine at start up. Remember, going 10,000, means you probably will be adding oil between changes, since many of our engines do use oil.
