Default 2005 A4 B7 Project Plan

Hello all!

So I've been lurking these forums for a while now piecing together the mods that I want to do to my A4. I've got a couple questions as anyone who begins a project has.

But first, the introduction: I'm JagoKaast, pro driver, gamer and mechanical engineer. I got my blue 2005.5 Audi A4 6spd Quattro a couple months ago, replaced a 1996 Dodge Avenger that I had been driving for 9 years. I've been taking my time planning what I want to do instead of just jumping ***** deep into a project and ending up with something I don't want. This approach has me asking a lot of questions, as I've seen people do similar things, some of them looking awesome, while others just don't do it for me. I want to do it right the first time. So far, all I've done is the Forge Spacer (Atmospheric DV) which I absolutely love. I plan on doing an exhaust, rims, tint, carbonio intake, chip... all that stuff I'm fine with and don't have any questions that part. Those will happen, just a matter of time.

Here is where I get to the questions. To begin, what I want to accomplish is yellow headlights. I've seen a couple headlight covers, film applications, 3000K HID bulbs and halogen coated bulbs and I'm not sure which works best. Specifically, I want to be able to look at my car and see crystal yellow headlights, and HID at the same time (if that makes sense). Doesn't seem like many people want to go this route or im not looking in the right places.

Anyways, I have halogen headlights currently. What I want to do specifically is get this set of projector headlights from ECS tuning ( Audi B7 A4 Quattro 2.0T > Lighting > Headlights > ES#1899243 Halogen Projector Headlight Set - Smoked - Pair - 82463 ), toss 3000K HIDs in there from Mcculloch (HID car healights - Single Beam HID Conversion Kits from UBLstore.com[EntityIDs=@%28161%29@*ava=0] ), and go to town. Has anyone seen this done?

The reason I'm asking, is that I've been told one hundred different things about headlights and I thought I had a good grasp on them but now I just don't know.

Firstly, I know that 3000K HIDs (yellow) are illegal as main headlights (and probably my whole goal of having yellow is illegal, but im a gambling man).

Secondly, I'm told not to put HIDs (bulb/ballast kits) into reflector (halogen) housings, either because its dangerous to oncoming traffic or could melt the housing or it looks bad. Whichever the case is, I don't plan on doing that.

Lastly, I see ECS tuning has OEM HID headlight assemblies for sale ( Audi B7 A4 Quattro 2.0T > Lighting > Headlights > ES#1884476 European Xenon Ready Headlight Housings - Pair - 8E0941029BP030BP ) but I guess I don't know what AFS systems are. I get the idea what Bi-Xenons are (one light for highs and lows). I guess I just get so confused with what I need to buy to get it all to work. Is there a reason I can't do the above? Or do I have to have special OEM headlight assemblies for $1700.00 before I can even drop in HID bulb/ballasts?

Final-sub question, I've seen these headlight films you can apply to the outside of the headlights. That seems sorta like what I may have seen and liked, but it seems so cheap and sloppy to get what I want. Any thoughts on these? I might pick up a set of yellow ones from ECS and test it out on my halogen before I go further.

Anyways, sorry for the long post, but hopefully someone can point me in the right direction so I can get this project off the ground.

Welcome! Due to their different light dispersion patterns, it is not recommended to put HID bulbs in halogen reflectors. I'm not sure about HIDs in halogen projectors. There are also aftermarket HID projector kits you could get, such as from Depo. I'm not a fan of yellow lights, but I think having it come from yellow HIDs will look much better than having yellow film over the housing.

How about AFS systems and Bi-Xenons? I "think" I know what Bi-Xenons are, but I'm clueless on AFS. Also, I hear talking about leveling motors and stuff like that, does that have to do with both or just bi-xenons?

I'm gonna try out the yellow film just to see what it looks like on my halogens, but I do intend on getting an HID kit sometime, its like one of those things I just have to have

Yes, bi-xenon means one bulb that is used for both low and high beams. The AFS is the auto-adjusting headlights, which as far as I know is only for bi-xenon. They move up and down if your car is loaded more in front or in back, and also swivel side to side when you turn the steering wheel.

Headlights can be painted and cleared. Any repuatable tail light person can do a head light. Just choose a color and brightness

Phase 1: Yellow Headlights - Complete!

So I went out on a limb and tried out the protective films from Lamin-X. It turned out pretty nice. I mean, I did a terrible job on the passenger side headlight, idk if I just didn't put enough effort in the prep, but all in all I'm happy with it. Maybe these pics will convey the message of what I am trying to accomplish. Also, I'm planning on blacking out all the chrome except the rings, that will stay chrome.

So with Phase 1 complete, I'm gonna move on to intake next before fall. Might not get around to rims/lowered or exhaust just yet...

I may still bust out and get those Mcculloch 3000K HID kits... But I still don't know if I should get a projector headlight set... Any thoughts now that people can kind of see what I want?

If you like the yellow housing look, you don't really need to get yellow HIDs. If you get HIDs, you should get projectors.

If you use Plasti-Dip on the chrome it can be peeled off if you want the chrome look back without damage. Awesome stuff. No need to sand or anything.

Need is a matter of opinion, but in this case I NEED both hah

So I've been making most of my decisions based on ECS Tuning and what they have. I see they have these projector sets Audi B7 A4 Quattro 2.0T > Lighting > Headlights > ES#1884441 B7 A4/S4/RS4 European Xenon Ready Headlight Housings - Pair - 8E0941029BM030BM but they are $1700... why so expensive? Is there anything other than that out there? Further up the page they also have these Audi B7 A4 Quattro 2.0T > Lighting > Headlights > ES#1899243 Halogen Projector Headlight Set - Smoked - Pair - 82463 but say they are halogen. What is actually the difference? Sounds like neither have the ballasts or bulbs or anything.

The first pair is Audi OEM... that's why it's so expensive. For the second one, it's not clear whether it's saying it's HID projectors that fit in the halogen wiring socket, or if they actually use halogen bulbs.

Search for DEPO and Dectane, as they also make headlamps for our cars.
