Default Dealership vs. Private Seller

I'm in the market for an 06-07 A4. I plan to buy one during summer break, hopefully within 1-2 months from now.

I'm looking at:
-black exterior
-prefer black interior, but not a dealbreaker if not
-AWD
-quattro
-less than 50k miles

Some options I really want:
-premium package
-bose sound system
-heated front seats
-might want some satellite radio

Now, based on these criteria, the prices range from $19k to $22k for dealerships, and around $15-19k for private sellers. I'm looking at a budget of around $20K, but it all comes down to how much my dad is willing to spend as well.

When dealing with dealerships, how much can I expect to pay if the car is, say, around $20k? Would it be plausible to shave off $1~2K? What if I'm dealing with a private seller?

I'm also looking at the possibility of paying a licensed person to buy a car from an auction where they are significantly cheaper.

What would you guys recommend I do? I live in the Boston area.

Thanks for your time!

AWD and Quattro are one in the same.

I bought my 2005.5 with 16k miles from a dealer about a year ago as a CPO and ended up with three years of warranty on it. For me, this peace of mind was worth the extra money I paid. I would recommend pricing out an after market warranty if you buy it elsewhere as it may be more cost effective. I had one on my previous Saab and it was no different then the factory warranty and was well worth the investment. Audi's aren't the cheapest to repair.

If you hire someone to buy it at auction you may not be able to reject it if its not in the condition you want. Be careful not to get stuck with something you don't want because you bought it without being able to look at it. I'm not sure how this works, so I could be wrong... Something to look into.

Good luck.

CPO is definitely the way to go. But you should be able to talk the dealership down a little from what they list as the price.

Just bought a CPO 2005 with 25K mi.

Dealer followed through, fixing all problems. Loaner car. Plus did the 36K service, saving me >$500 (CVT fluid/filter change) before the warranty expired.

Last month I got a 2006 A4 2.0T Quattro 6sp manual, black/black, technology, premium, satellite radio, bluetooth, sunroof, lighting, cold weather packages, etc... 65k miles for $14,500 at a dealer, though he said he got his cars direct from Audi not from auction so he was more like a wholesaler.

Couldn't be happier. Only reason I could figure was the high miles, otherwise the car has been great.

i am the one who offered to help to buy the car at local auction (just bought mine there). you can see pictures and can even look at the car in person and possibly even drive it. There is no risk here, but you do have to be serious about buying one, otherwise its just going to be a great waist of your time, my time, and my friends time who has the dealer license. and ps. i am not getting paid here, my friend does. he obviously didnt charge me

also. the main question here is: Do you what 6-speed or Auto. Its pretty easy to find an Auto at dealers and private party (I saw an 08 with less then 10k miles for $22k), but if you want 6-speed, thats another story. I was NOT able to locate the one I liked in 3 months. and i ended up purchasing my 08 for $25k at auction.......and i also just found out that my car had Free Audi Maintenance plan which is cool considering i didnt pay for it.

I'm looking for Automatic, not manual.

use this: http://crazedlist.org/ it will allow you to search whole New England (maybe add NY too). and dont jump on something cheap, buy something thats good. good means less problems down the road. and definitely get something with at least 1-2 years of warranty left or CPO car.

I don't know if I'm willing to venture that far. I'm trying to stick to Boston, preferrably something within 50 miles of my zip code haha.
