ESP Problems...
the esp light may come off but the esp is always working. when you push the button it illuminates to keep you from getting distracted when it is working/blinking. when you turn the ignition off, the esp light goes off until you push it again after you start it up. when i push the button, the esp light stays on.
are you sure!? i live in arctic conditions for 3 months of the year. when i don't hit the esp button, the esp symbol flashes when i lose traction and the esp is intervening. when i hit the button, the symbol is always lit up and is not disabled. it's never disabled.

Nope. I believe eMacPaul is correct. If you push the button, ESP is turned off. What would make you believe that pushing the button means nothing?
It flashes to alert you that you've lost traction... I'm not sure, but that may actually mean its corrective capability has been exceeded and it's temporarily non-functional. It stays lit when it's turned off to alert you that it is not active.
If you push the button and see the light, the ESP system is OFF.
When the system is ON, the icon will flash whenever ESP is being engaged. This is so you know the gas and brakes are being controlled by the ESP system to point the car where you seem to intend to want to go. Designed most likely so you won't fight the car.
Per the manual, about the only time you want the ESP OFF (light on dash on continuous) is if you are trying to get out of deep snow. There are other reasons too, but Audi doesn't really deal with drifting being legitimate.
