Excessive Cranking

Excessive Cranking
I bought my 2005.5 2.0 Quattro (16k miles) back in July and absolutely am in love with the car. However, periodically throughout the summer and fall from a cold engine I would have excessive cranking trying to start. I would say 5-6 seconds, and usually when I am about to let go of the key it kicks over. Sometimes I can hear it try to catch but not get all the way in the middle.
I took it to the dealer under warranty and they let it sit overnight and said it started up in around 2 seconds which was in spec so there was nothing they could do. However, as its gotten colder, most mornings I do have a little more cranking then I would expect, and sometimes it still goes for the 5-6 seconds. Any thoughts or suggestions? Right now its more of a nuisance (and embarrassment if others are around), but I'm worried come winter it could be more of a problem.

I have the same problem. I have an 2005.5 2.0 as well with about 58k now and Its been doing that since I bought it over a year ago at about 28k. I also took it to the dealership under warranty and they said that replaced a few things and tried it and it was fixed, but the next morning same thing. Let me know if you figure it out.

The CEL was a result of turbo underboost. I unfortunatly haven't had time to do much research, but I will relay what the dealer told me. The turbo valve has a rubber seal that apparently was cracked and leaking resulting in air escaping and it not reaching pressure.
The dealer stated that they could not find anything wrong with how the car starts which i expected because it has to sit overnight to give me problems. They claim this turbo fix may help that but I am pretty skeptical. However, this morning the car turned over right away so we will see.
I doubt this is much help for you motoxxx, but thats all I know. Let me know if figure anything out on your end.

This is a very common problem for our cars when it gets colder out. Try this... when you get in your car on the next cold morning put the key in and turn it to "on". Wait about 5-10 seconds till you hear all the fluids get primed and set. Then go to start the car and it should start (relatively) quicker.

Tsb...
There is a TSB that helps with this. I don't have the TSB # handy...but, it requires them to re-flash the control module. Eventually, if it doesn't get done..it will trigger a CEL code. I wish I could give you a little more info on it but I found out everything on here...do some digging and you might can find it

i have a 2006 a4 2.0t with 32,000 miles and that does happen to me occasionally, usually when its cold but not always. It happened today when it was in the 70's outside. I'm just waiting for the 35,000 mile service to take it in and see what is wrong since it doesn't really seem to be a problem.
