GTI died :(... Possible new A4 owner.
Hi all,
My car got hit by some guy 3 times(Yes. three times) and it's totaled.
Just peeking in to say hi and search around, one of my main concerns is the cam follower. I know the 2.0T's are similar, but not sure if a 07-08 A4 will have the same issues as the MKV GTI's and GLI's.
Any big reasons to go against a quattro? I would love awd for the winter, but the inner DIY'er tells me that it'll be a hassle to work on in the future?
For now, I'll keep searching.. And I'll post pics of my car..

The guy who I think was drunk hit my rear while I was going about 30mph. Then hit my side, then AFTER we stopped, he reversed into me. I'm pretty sure he was drunk...
Anyway, my 3 choices right now: GTI,A4,3 Series.
I don't want a new car, so obviously if I were to get the Audi or BMW it would be a little older...

Being a current MKV owner and just selling my A4, I had both for a few years together. If you care about speed at all you be vey dissapointed going to an A4 from a GTI. The A4 will be about 300+ pounds heavier in FWD and close to 500 in AWD. My wife had the A4 and it was nice but never close in speed. You will need a chip to make get out of its own was.
As far as engines go it will have the same FSI engine exactly unless your GTI was newer 2008+ with the TSFI that the newer A4's have. I would also consider an A3 if you like the hatch as it will be lighter than the A4 as well.
I just drove the 3 series BMW and thought the interior looked like it was from the 90's. I ended up trading the A4 for a new C300 which is awesome if you have not considered a used one of those. Good luck.

Yea, read about your GTI on the forum. So is it actually totalled? Last I read, you weren't sure. Anyway, our son has a '06 GTI and he got a chance to drive our daughter's '08 A4 2.0T. He also says the A4 feels much slower than his GTI. The A4 has the CVT tranny with paddle shifters. It's better in sport mode and paddle shifting but still not quite the speed and fun of the GTI. I think of the A4 as more of a cruiser than a quick little scooter. Good luck and glad the idiot in the SUV didn't injure you. Really bizarre story though.
holy hell sorry about the gti! always sad to see
where in NY are you?
just a couple of opinions- the a4 will feel way slower than your gti...by a lot. ive driven the b7s, and although theyre solid and quick enough, it wont feel as snappy or playful as the gti. my friend is actually trying to sell his fahrenheit gti and you can pm me if youre interested.
IMHO forget the 3 series. theyre nice and solidly built, but for the cost, it really does feel and look like youre in a MUCH older car. the dash and radio/climate interface, even in brand new ones, looks identical to my buddies early 90s 5 series.
good luck with your search!
