HID kit questions
I am intrested in installing a HID conversion kit into my B7. My questions is what bulb do i need? Is the H7 good? I was looking to pick up the kit from vision bulbs http://www.visionbulbs.com/vb_product.php#
I am also toying with the idea of installing some 3000k bulbs into the foglights to make them give off a yellow light. In order to do this will i need a whole new conversion kit? How will that work along with a low beam kit? Are they any different?
Finally, will 6000k low beams in the halogen housing bedazzle (I like that word) other drivers? I want the nice bright white of HID lights without a crazy light pattern that makes the car look stupid or blinds other drivers. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.
Oh yea... if i wanted to put projectors into the car I would need the HID projector housing which would put the total cost of the job up into the 1700's right?
Thanks
EDIT:
I just found these bulbs for the foglights:
http://www.ecstuning.com/stage/edpd/...bcategory=Fogs
Would those be as good as HID bulbs for the foglights (yellow color styling) or would i still be better off with some sort of kit for the fogs. Thanks again

dude, you seem pretty knowledgeable about the hid conversion situation. yes to everything you said (besides the bedazzled thing) They can be retrofitted, but the beam would be off. and the 3000k fogs are awesome in my book, would love to do it. New housings down there id say, otherwise might melt the housing.
When you say they can be retrofitted but the beam would be off do you mean the projectors could be retrofitted or the 6000k HID bulbs could be retrofitted .... I just want to avoid getting a crazy beam pattern. Thanks for the help!
A you may know, the problem with retrofitting HIDs into halogen reflectorsis that a HID's arc doesn't quite correspond with the position and geometry of the filament on ahalogen bulb like an H7. That's why the resulting beam pattern -- specifically the horizontal cut-off -- is at least not quite right when you do an upgrade like these guys are selling. And with the HIDs' vastly increased brightness, that means you're going to be blinding oncoming traffic.
Projectorsdo a much better job at controlling a headlight beam than halogen reflectors. That's why almost all stock HIDs are still projectors (with a few specific exceptions -- but on those cars, the reflectors are specifically designed to work with their HIDs).
In addition,HIDs in Europealso require automatic leveling, so you don't tip the beam up and blind traffic when your trunk is loaded -- I think that's probably U.S. law too. I'm not a big fan of DOT lighting regulations, but this is a good one.
Notice that visonbulbs.com don't even claim that their HIDs will give you a good beam pattern -- just that they're brighter.
What was that old Pirelli ad? Something about power needing control?
If I were in your place, I'dstick with the halogens,or go with a full HID/bi-xenon projector conversion. U.S.- or European-spec. With auto-leveling. $$$$? Yup, to do it right.
Another option might be to retrofit European halogen headlights -- I've seen advertising claims that the beam pattern is better than the U.S. version, but I've got my doubts. Cost would be about $800. But for that price, you're a good way towardproper bi-xenons.

This site:
http://www.sylvania.com/ConsumerProd...RG-Results.htm
claims that i need HID-D1S bulbs for my a4, is this correct as very few sites carry kits with the D1s bulb type. I also noticed on one site the conversion kit is supposted to position the light the same way the hallogen filliment would resulting in a normal beam pattern. Does this sound possible?
Q: If my lights are 3X brighter than they are now, am I going to blind everyone else on the road?
A: O-NEX HID burners (bulbs) were engineered to position the xenon arc-discharge in the place your filament used to be - so your car will maintain the same beam-pattern with a whiter, more intense light output. If your lights didn't glare or blind on-comming traffic before, they won't with your new xenon conversion.

I found a website that sells what looks like a very high-end/high quality HID conversion kit. I was wondering if anyone else has or knows more about this kit, thanks!

That sounds like the same sort of deal i linked to above... but more expensive. I sent a message to the company selling the kit i linked to. Below is the response:

If your Audi doesn't have the factory HID's then you would need an H7 HID kit. The beam pattern should be the same as the factory bulbs. I run the kit we carry in all 3 of my vehicles and almost never get anyone flashing there brights at me. The beam pattern is very good with these bulbs. We sell only brand new sealed kits so once we ship out a kit and you break the tamper seal then the HID bulbs inside the kit aren't returnable.

I have a 2006 Audi A4 that i want to fit with HIDs. The What Fits My Car? link provided says that i need HID-D1S bulbs for the low beams on my car. You guys do not carry these bulbs with a conversion kit. I have also heard from some other people that the H7 bulbs will work. How exactly does this work and will I be able to use H7 bulbs instead of the D1S type bulbs.
Also, you claim that the beam pattern created by your bulbs is the same as with a standard halogen bulb because of the way the light is positioned from the bulb. I know this not to be the case with other conversion kits. Is this simply a marketing tactic, or do your bulbs actually preserve beam pattern. If I find this to not be the case will I be able to return it? (basically do you guys stand behind your word on the beam pattern not bedazzling other drivers or are you less than confident in the claim?)
Thanks!

ok, just for clarification, how does the H7 bulb work with what the site claims are D1S bulbs... does the H7 bulb fit into the huge metal base thing on the D1S bulbs? Thanks for the fast response, thats what i call service!

Evan--
Six years ago, I was actually considering retrofitting HIDs into my 1997 VW Passat, into which I'd already retrofitted European headlights. We were moving to Eastern Europe, with its -- um -- interesting roads, and my eyes weren't getting any younger.
Just like you,I actually e-mailed a company (a different one) and asked about their beam pattern and whether I could return the lights if I wasn't satisfied.
Just, like you, I got assurances that they'd done this many times before, without problems. (Hmmm... "almost never get anyone flashing there [sic] brights at me"...)
But just like you, they told me thatonce I installed the lights, I couldn't return them no matter what.
So satisfaction not guaranteed, apparently.
I declined the opportunity.
*edit*
I just stumbled across this. It's been referenced at least once before here, but I think it's worth reading.
I'm not a big fan of DOT lighting regulations. I've been driving"illegal" European-spec headlights in the U.S. since 1981, instead of POS DOT-approved headlights; and my current Passat has100-watt high-beam H1's in it.
But I think there's a worldwide consensusregarding this kind of HID retrofit.
Flame on?

Humm yea there is always that chance i suppose. I have seen a few good looking beam patterns but also some very bad ones. I did find on the manufacturer's website that there was a 100% satasfaction gaurantee in which the kit could be returned if i did not satasfy (?) you. I think i will contact the company and see how that works. Thanks for the imput, I'm going to continue to investigate the situation.
