Default Hoping this oil change will solve check engine light?

I topped off my 2006 a4 2.0T with 5w 30 HUGE MISTAKE and following the intense cold blast the check engine light came on. im doing an oil change with 5w 40 tomorow. This should resolve it right?

The light might not have anything to do with the oil. You might want to get the code read. Turbo's run hotter hence the need for the 40 weight oil. It's never a good idea to mix different oil viscosities. You might want to carry a bottle of 5w40 synthetic aproved by VW in the trunk, since it's not that easy to find outside an auto store. I have a bottle in my trunk. I've been lucky to never have to add. My car does not use oil, and I check it on a regular basis.

Adding a quart of 5-30 should not have made much difference and should not have set the CEL. Go get the code read at a local auto parts store and understand what happened. The only thing that would happen would be you could burn slightly more oil but not noticeable. You have another problem here so get the code and see what needs to be done to fix it.

the oil change did in fact reset the CEL... performace is a bit below par though. i might have been stingy with the oil... could that be why?

Have you gone to a local auto parts store (autozone , etc) and ask them to check the diag. codes. Oil should not have caused it to run poorly unless you run out. You have another problem so get it checked. They will not charge you but you will see what codes are in the computer. DO this before you screw up the car. You may be running in limp mode .

Your 30 or 40 oil will be no significant loss of power or a problem to use either. Try to stay within factory specs but toppig off with a slightly different weight is fine. I have done it many times depending on which Mobil 1 I have laying around.
