Need Advice - Cam Follower
I didn't tell them I knew the follower was toast. However, I did insist on physical inspection of the follower, at my own cost of course. I also informed them of all the maintenance I had done in the past 2 weeks (new PCV, Diverter, N80, spark plugs and coils). I also showed them my receipt for the R&R of the low-pressure fuel sensor done by a non-Audi shop, and I showed them my letter for flapper motor extended warranty - which they confirmed they had already addressed at that dealership (I had forgotten that). I also mentioned I had sporadic sputtering and acceleration issues under light load, and that I had seen the EPC light flash a couple of times.
Long story short, I believe insisting on the cam follower inspection at my own cost was the tipping point.
I'm now wondering if I should follow-up with AoA about the potential follow-on damage from the metal shavings. At least I would have thought Audi would pay for my freaking oil change.

I wouldn't worry too much about metal shavings. That follower you showed has been going/gone for a long time. You've probably changed the oil and gotten rid of a lot of those metal pieces already at this point.
Umm, just the cam, not the HPFP, and no oil.
Are you positive of this?! That's highly unusual.
I'd explicitly ask if the service tech if the hpfp was infact damaged. Seems to me the pictures clearly show both the plunger and spring are shot.
They will give you a itemized repair invoice.
You should be wise to let them know your concerns before you take deliver of the car. Oil consumption etc. It's sometimes irritating to do this kind of thing, but remember this is audi's warranty and the camfollower failure can and has caused more damage to b7s than just the few parts. For records sake establish the conversation regarding these things because you don't want to close the chapter prematurely. Even if it means monitoring your oil levels from here on until satisfied.

Hard to tell from the picture you posted on page 1, but if your HPFP tip doesn't look like this, it's shot and they should replace it as well. Looked like yours was worn, but the angle wasn't great.

It didn't look to me like there was any contact between the pump plunger and the cam.

Judging from the following photo, it looks like there was still sufficient material on the cam follower to cover the crown of the plunger, preventing it from contacting the cam.

What do you guys think?

Dealer called me this afternoon, they decided to keep the car one more day. The rep said they were double checking to make sure there were no codes and no issues with the cam or any codes.
I wanted to mention that on Sunday after I put the pump back into the car I did trip the EPC light by unplugging the two connectors on the fuel pump. I suppose that probably stored some codes, even though there was not EPC or CEL after that.
In the meantime I've been driving an brand new Allroad Quattro as a loaner. It's quite a vehicle in some respects, but it seems to be too isolated from the road. It also makes a weird clunk on pot holes or big dips in the road, as though the bump stops are bottoming out. I will say I'm impressed with some of the refinements and creature comforts - something Audi seems to excel at, but I'm not all that impressed with the ride. I suppose it's ultra smooth and supple for soccer moms, but it feels rather numb and somewhat floaty to me. Anyone else try one?

hmmm. Compared to the picture posted by KingWulfgar it does appear different. The rod inside the spring does not appear to be connected to the retaining ring atop the spring. Maybe this is worse than I thought. This makes me even more concerned that metal debris is floating around inside the engine now.
Supposing the dealer R&Rs the cam and the pump, what say you about the risk of damage from the metal debris? It can't be good.

103K miles, of which 98K I are mine, I bought the car with 5k miles on it. No oil loss whatsoever. I've never yet added oil between changes, which have all been done 8-10k apart.
